Trunk Release Cable too loose

Anyone know if there is a way or how to adjust tensioner & slack in the trunk release lever cable? I noticed mine has been pretty loose lately and now it quit working unless I use the key or remote keyless entry button. I pulled it apart at the release levers & can see a lot of loose cable slack for the trunk cable, but it has one of those funny cylinder-shaped heads at the end of the cable like the throttle/cruise control cables have, so I'm not sure how you would tighten it up.

Any thoughts??

BTW it's a Gen 2 if that matters.. Thanks!

FYI I know it's because the cable is just stretched from being used during its life, I'm just wondering if anyone has found a successful "fix" to correct it without replacing it with a better used one. I've checked and the cable is discontinued from Ford
