Since I bought my '91+ more than 5 years ago, it has been difficult to get into 1st gear, whether the car is running or not. There is no problem going into any other gears. If I was rolling a little bit or put it into 2nd and then 1st I could always get it into gear. Within the last month or so it has gotten to the point that no matter what I try the only way it will go into 1st is to force it, and after a few times my arm starts killing me. There isn't any grinding, its just very very difficult. I have a cable shifter, I'm not sure if that could be a factor or not. Does anyone know some possible causes of this problem?

I'd start by checking the fluid level. There is a fill port on the "front" side of the trans. Use a 3/8'' drive w/ an extension to pull the plug.

Another issue could be related to the clutch quadrent... which is located in the clutch pedal. But one step at a time.

By the way...your fluid level WILL be low. Be prepared with at least 2 quarts of ATX fluid (yes, ATX fluid) I'd recommend having 3 quarts handy. The total capacity is just over 3 quarts. I also recommend using teflon tape on the plug before reinstalling...make sure it's wrapped around counter-clockwise as you look at the threaded end of the plug. I use 3 complete wraps and then smooth it out with my fingers.

When you force the shifter into first(or any gear), you put a lot of wear on things. I would put this problem at THE TOP of my priority list.

I'll check the fluid. When the shifting became almost impossible about 2 weeks ago I stopped driving it. Last time I filled the fluid was about a year ago, and I used Mobile 1. Would the type of fluid make a difference?

No that much difference...unless you are talking about gear oil...thats no good atoll.

If, after you fill the fluid, the problem persists, then start doing research online regarding the clutch quadrant. Make sure that it's operational.

If the problem persists still, then it's time for a clutch.

If the problem persists still, it's time to contact Bizzy.

No matter how bad the problem(worst case - trans is toast), it can be fixed for less than $1000 if you do your own labor.

Actually, I would check the linkage before you takle a clutch....

I shoulda mentioned that before... I thought about it.

I agree...check the linkage at the same time you verify the quadrant is working.

I would venture to guess your problem is with the cable shifter. The cables stretch over time, making shifting harder. The ends of the cables are a plastic cup style that snap on a metal ball. These can also break. I would check the fluid level, then the shift linkage. If there is a problem with the cables, now is the time to upgrade to a rid shifter. The rod shifter is available from May of 91 to 95. Give us a report back, and enjoy having a PLUS!!!

Problem solved! First I changed the transmission fluid and it did not improve at all. I looked underneath the car at the cables for the shifter and found out that the cable had too much play because the one bolt that goes through the lever had its threads worn down. I replaced it with another bolt and it shifts fine now. Thanks to everyone for their help, and thank God that it wasn't a problem inside the Transmission! I'm also one of the "lucky" ones with a 5/91 cable shifter.
