First I notice a chattering sound in first and second gear at low rpm I do hear it in anything but first and second although there is no clutch slip and the gears have plenty of power/torque (which ever it is). Also I noticed first and second gears sometimes will shift hard to get into gear again no loss of power felt or clutch slip just a hard shift. Granted its a 20 year old trans so I guess the synchronizers are wearing out?

I almost forgot reverse gear will grind unless I shift slowly into gear does not always grind though

reverse has no synchro, so will always grind if you shift into rev too quickly.

chattering sounds more like a bearing issue than a synchro issue, and a bad bearing on the input or main shaft can also cause hard shifts. in either case, disassembly is required to diagnose and repair the problem.
