I have an 94 ATX with 120,000. I also put in a new engine with 61k which runs strong and makes no noises etc. The Transmission tough is shifting very bad from 1st to 2nd. Only when the car heats up to normal temperature. Even worst when I stop...let's say on a red light, the tranny waits for about 2 to 3 seconds and then shifts back to 1st gear. It shifts very loud like a knock or something back to first gear....very scary. This is not happening on every stop, but after a couple. ONLY WHEN THE CARS HEATS UP TO NORMAL OR MORE. The first 10 minutes of driving the car shifts great.
Anyone ideas ?

It could also be the VSS. Im not very sure what I should try first, but i'll try the sensor just to see. Anybody have other clues, would be great.
thanks, dario

yeah, thats a classic VSS symptom since it sits so close to the exhaust. once it gets hot it poops on you. shop around and find out how much it will cost you to replace or if you plan on doing it yourself be prepared for some blood, sweat and tears because its a bitch on the atx.

also, i believe the forward clutch piston also contributes to that problem. if you determine its not your VSS then you will most likely need a rebuild when it gets worse because the forward clutch piston is a long job. let us know how it turns out!
