so i had my trans "go out" on me.
lost clutch feeling... leaked all the fluid everywhere...

i have one on order but after taking this damned thing apart i see no significant damage to it. There was this black clip that came out of the bell housing and its shredded and mangled to pieces.
I fear that was the problem and now i have taken apart an MTX that was perfectly fine. I am totally freaking out beyond belief.

For those of you know know an MTX by heart or know most of the things about them and how they work....
PLEASE call me asap. 920.740.4573.

Guide me through this. I am working on putting the synchros back together as they came apart when i took the main shaft out :(
SOB.

I fear i took apart a perfectly good trans when i didnt even need to

uploading pics as i speak...

ok synchros are back together finally... now i gotta piece the trans back together... only problem is i still dont know what caused the original problems.

driving in 3rd, on the gas hard.
Let up to shift into 4th and car made a sudden "not in gear" effect.
Clutch felt like a bag of sand... not smooth and tough
Rev matched to hit 5th gear and no engagement.
none in 4th either.
pulled over.
checked under the car to see trans fluid draining out of the flywheel/clutch small gap.
up on a lift - turning the tires i hear clunking as if the diff or pinion stripped.
ordered a new transmission... on its way as we speak.
took trans apart - (what an idiot move)
differential seems to have the diff pins welded (like the upgrade suggests)
besides a few minor nicks in the main shaft gears (3 or 4 nicks maybe)
nothing seems to be a problem.
the 5th picture is this "mysterious black clip" that has been mangled.
it was presumed to be located in the bell housing area
evidence of shrapenel in the bell housing area is presumed to be this black clip

still dont know the following
why the clutch felt like shit (the black clip?)
why it sounded as if my pinion took a shit on me
why it wont engage in gear
why it leaked out all my fluid.

Ive pulled apart and reassembled my trans a number of times, but its been a while. None of your pics come up for me. They keep going to a download page. If you could post a pic I could see, or email them to me at [email protected] I could probably id it.....if its not too mangled. You dont have any holes in your case, do you? Do you know where the trans fluid came out at? It almost sounds like something (maybe a piece of clutch strap) cut through the aluminun trans case and released your fluid.

Pressure plate went? Looks like rivets on those black peices. Sounds like it took out the trans case with it. Id put that diff in your new trans. The chipped gears are now paper weights. Look at the bellhousing side of the case, is it cracked anywhere? Look hard. If your fluid came out, its broken somewhere.

I believe that is a St. Louis SHO diff. (Hi james)

yeah, its not a "perfectly good transmission" because all that metal on the magnet is way more than I've seen on a good one.

and as was said, gears with chips out of them are not usable.

if fluid was leaking out, there is a blown seal or a hole in the case somewhere.

Took a look at the pics. I would definitly use the new trans you have coming. Does the new one have a welded diff? If not you could use the welded diff you have....after a very close inspection to insure it is not dmaged. You would need to reshim the new case for that diff though. Shonutperformance.com has the tool needed avaliable to rent. They also have the quaife install/mtx rebuild video which I found very helpfull when messing with the trans internals. It shows you step by step how to shim it. Good luck.

From what I see, you will need at least a main shaft, and 5th gear shaft.
Chepped teeth ='s junk. Save the rest of the tranny. DO NOT throw anything away! The rest of it should be ok. As others have stated, carefully check the clutch side of the tranny bellhousing. I would bet there is a slice or crack from when the pressure plate let loose.

There are several of us that have extra parts.
P.M. if interested.

yeah i fould the slit where it punctured it. and leaked out all the fluid. i have not taken apart my new trans yet....

and from the sounds of it ill have to take off the clutch to see the real problem.
i have to find a alignment tool first though.

you don't really need an alignment tool for these trans - since the input shaft does not go into a pilot bearing, you just need to get it close - if you eyeball it carefully and align with screwdriver as you start to clamp the pressure plate down, you can get it close enough to get the trans mated to the engine. the first time you release the clutch, it aligns itself perfectly. I've done this several times with no issues.

I would plan on rreplacing the clutch. Those pieces in the pics looked like clutch pieces to me.

Take the clutch side of your tranny housing to a good welding shop. They will be able to repair the crack made by the pressure plate strap failure.

I've made a pilot tool using a socket that was close to the pressure plate finger ID, and an extension that was close to the disc spline ID. Wrap with tape until you get a slip fit.

As others have noted it does not have to be perfect.

yup... it was the clutch. it actually sheared from the dampner spring assembly.
so now that has ruined my trans, and i need a new clutch.

i will post pics if anyone needs me to...

also... i am now looking for a stage 2 clutch for cheap. anyone know one for sale?

that type of clutch failure often results from aggressive downshifting w/o rev matching. be sure you are driving appropriately to avoid a repeat. note that a stage 2, etc. clutch will not solve a driving problem. I'm not saying you don't know how to drive, I'm just saying that one of the main causes of that type of failure is poor driving by someone.

There is no need for an alignment tool. I do it the "sho nut" way, with my fingers.
