I did an oil change on my 94 this week and I noticed that my transmission pan is bent, like the previous own went over a rock with it. I wanted to replace it and found out that the pan for the AXOD-E is discontinued. I had the parts guy at ford look up a pan for the AX4S since it should be the exact same thing. My question is would I be okay getting the AX4S pan and switching it or do you guys think that it would not fit?

Thanks for all the help,

Enos

Thanks, I'll go pick one up soon. Is there anything else that I should pick up besides the pan and gasket?

Since you will have the pan down, change the filter. The filter should come with a little o-ring. Make sure you get the orange one. That is for the SHO transmission.

You will need about 7 quarts of fluid also.

I hate to be the dissenting voice, but someone on the Shotimes list went through the same thing. He found out that the pans are indeed different. The SHO pan is deeper. The part # is F3DZ7A194A. You can get a new one from collectorsautosupply.com for $141. Apparently, they bought up all the remaining stock from Ford and marked them up. I'd get a used one, maybe from Al Fitz?

The slight difference in the depth will not affect it. A regular AX4S pan will work. I am almost positive of this.

I've had the best luck with the Pioneer transmission filter kits....for the SHO tranny it is #745028. They come with a rubber pan gasket which IMHO is way better than the cork crap. Also, I have held this filter right next to the Ford one....can't tell much of a difference.

As to your question as to the Ford #... haven't a clue.

That's what you're lead to believe. There's a great percentage of dealers and warehouses who stock inventory that are NOT entered on an online, available to the public, inventory list.

Ok I've got another question I'm about to put the new pan on with the gasket. Is the gasket a dry gasket or should I use some RTV sealer on it?

It is dry. You don't want to use any RTV, because it can break off inside the tranny....and clog it up.

Okay I've done the fluid change but I was stuck using the old pan. The new AX4S pan was indeed more shallow than the SHO pan, but also the 2 or 3 of the holes required different size screws and the gasket that came with the AX4S was completely different from the SHO gasket. So I just ended up banging the dent out of the SHO pan as much as possible and using the gasket that came with my filter kit and installing it. So far no problems and it's also a short time fix since I plan to do an MTX swap in the future.
