Figured it'd be easier to post than try to search for hours typing in "jerking after letting off gas". Anyway, that's what the 89 does. I know in MTX cars there's some sort of "gear lash"? (is that what it's called?) when you let off the gas; however, about 1/2 a sec. after letting off, it's rather a harsh ****. I've replaced the front motor mount with a NESHO reinforced mount, so that problem has been corrected. What should I check for this symptom?

If the tranny mount is bad, it is hard to tell by looking at it. You will have to get a jack under the car and lift it a bit and see if the mount rubber separates from the steel mount.
What you are describing is possibly a loose subframe bolt. See if your bushings are nicely compressed, get a socket on the bolt heads and see if they spin.
I don't think the tranny mount can allow something to get out of whack enough for the half second delay you are describing.

Hmm...now that I think of it, I'm remembering back on that carsurvey.org review that I laughed so hard at where a guy in an 89 Taurus had his subframe, motor, and tranny all drop out on the road and leave a trail of firey destruction behind him.

Sounds like ALSFB time for me! :woo-hoo:

Rear motor mount bad?

Yeah, if it jerks when you stab the throttle, check the front. If it jerks when you release, check the rear.

I've had a tranny mount fall apart completely (both metal pieces separate from the rubber) on an engine with reinforced front and rear mounts. You couldn't even tell that the tranny mount wasn't connected to anything. It basically just holds that end of the engine up, it doesn't really fight torque.

Front is fixed, much better...reinforced MM. As for the rear, I did a search. Looks like I can buy this part from RA or wherever, correct? Odd that they still make the rear but not the front.

As for replacing it, I've read that I don't have to drop the subframe and that I can just unbolt it and pull it out the side? I realize I "may" have to loosen the front MM bolts. I think I only have 1 or 2 bolts on the front one now anyway. I lost one but didn't bother to replace it.

The jerking is a nature of the beast, IMO. Think it has to do with the tune and the crap motor support.

Second, make sure you have two bolts through each motor mount. I've never done it, but some people have had a problem with two of those bolts breaking, let alone one.

Replacing the rear mount isn't too bad, IIRC. Take the big nuts off the bottom of both mounts, jack the engine up by the oil pan enough to take the weight off the mount, remove the two bolts from the rear mount, jack the motor up high enough that the big stud clears the subframe, pull out the old mount, stick in the new, bolt it to the engine, slowly lower the engine while make sure the stud falls into the subframe (might take some maneuvering), and reattach the mounts to the subfame.
