94 ATX that I just got shifts hard from 1st to 2nd sometimes...probably 50-60% of the time. It revs, I can kind of feel the shift coming, and then it bucks and jumps into 2nd. This is obviously not good, but I've never had an automatic car before so I don't really know what it means. Is the trans about to completely die or is this probably something that will just be annoying? Is there anything I can do to fix it without pulling the trans out? I already plan on flushing the trans and adding a cooler...anything else I should do while in there? Thank you.:salute:

The only thing I can think of is the TSS Sensor. It should be on the drivers side of the trans, behind the driver's wheel and fender lining, almost directly above the control arm mounting point.

Really? I didn't see one. I'll have to poke around in there a little more. I thought a trans cooler was a popular upgrade for the ATX cars? It's a 94.

Ive had a firm shift in my 94 trans for years without a rebuild, but if its slipping its not a good sign.

Nope, no slipping as far as I can tell. Phew. That is actually the best news I've heard since I got this car. :woo-hoo:

Hopefully losing a few hundred pounds will decrease the load on the trans enough for it to hang on longer. It's a theory.

Every AXOD-E tranny I have owned had a firm 1st to 2nd shift. Not one has failed on me. *Knock on wood*

The 93-95 atx have very nice factory trans coolers mounted behind the bumper, ahead of the radiator/condensor. You should not need an additional one.

There are several possibilities for the 'loose-slam' 1-2 shift:
electrical:
wiring, pcm, epc solenoid, trans oil temp sensor, mlp sensor, or SS3
hydraulic:
improper fluid level, high line pressure, high epc pressure,
valve body gasket problems, 1-2 capacity modulator valve, accumulator regulator valve, main regulator valve, springs, clips, check valves.

Most of the wiring, solenoids, gasket problems, etc. can be worked on w/o pulling the trans from the car.

Haha, I don't know if I'm ready to call it 'magic' yet but it is growing on me. I'm 24 and I haven't owned an automatic car since I was 17. I always said I never would be the SHO was too good a deal to pass up and the auto sort of fits the car somehow.

Not for nothing but I had pretty hard 1-2 shifts on my ATX prior to adding ALSFBs and I swear the shift is much smoother now, like the tranny is not moving around as much, I dunno if that really makes a difference but it seems to have to me...

I have a '94 ATX and I have also noticed the hard 1-2 shift once and a while, but aside from that my tranny seems stong. I notice it hard shifts usually if I cruise (no brake or gas and 10-20 Kph) and then I moderately give her some gas. Usually from a stop i don't get the hard 1-2 shift.

Sound familar???
