Ok, we are trying to add up all the expenses before the SHO gets going, now, we are curious about the transmisson. The car needs a new clutch, no mystery there, but what we are concerned about is the the trouble we had shifting from Nuetral to 1st, and from 1 to second. It seemed going from neutral to 1st, it was hard to find the righ "path" lets say in to first, it would take some effort to get it there, and sometimes the same deal would happen in second, or it would be even kind of easy to miss second (under race conditions"), my question is, does this sound like the transmission is going? or could it be as simple as the tranny fluid or somthing as simple like that needs to be done?, we really dont want to rebuild it if it really doesnt need to be. any help would be appreaciated .
Thanks
-Sam

could be a symptom of a dying clutch...not totally disengageing.

HOwever it could also be 1/2 synchros and blocking rings.

Hard to tell unless you split the trans apart on a bench.

Ya, ive been told Blocking Rings, and we know the clutch is going, but it did it before that, my dad was racing a LS lincoln (on the track) and he wasted us on the straight away because out of the turn we missed the shift from 1-2, and my NEVER misses Shifts, he's been driving stick for 35 years, hes just to good (i am not exagerating an anyway belive it or not lol).

Check my response to this topic -> Grindage Sucks

I just replaced my clutch parts and all blocking rings and seals inteh transaxle. The old blocking rings looked to be in good shape, but I couldn't shift into first gear without great effort due to the clutch not disengaging from the worn out throwout bearing.

If you are pulling out the motor why not just take the transaxle out as well. Rebuilding it is a relatively easy task if you follow directions. I got all of my parts (seals, blocking rings, and synchros) from IPT, i think it was somewhere near $350, don't have an invoice so i can't say for sure.

As stated, we are not Repairing the car ourselves, i am sure my dad could if we had the tools or the time, but neither is really available...Thanks

ANYBODY can miss a gear man. It doesn't matter how long you've been driving manual. I've missed 2nd in my car a number of times. One time I missed it while doing some ill behavior. It was quite embarrassing. When racing, you've gotta be perfectly synchronized when letting the clutch out and shifting the gears. You can cheat by letting the clutch up some while shifting to cut some corners. If you're even slightly off in the wrong direction, you can f it up and miss a gear. Clutch wear, tranny temp, and mounts are all variables besides blocking rings and syncros which may make shifts difficult. I'm no expert, but I'm speaking from my personal experience. My sho shifter is somewhat notchy compared to audis/vw's/toyotas but that's what I like. It's not difficult. Maybe pronounced is the better word. I hate sloshy manuals. My friend with the vr6 corrado can pull on the shifter boot to shift into 4th. I could probably pull it off when the tranny is warm in my car, but I just don't like the feel of a loose manual.

I have the same problem. Hard getting into 1st, first 2 second grinds  (race conditions), hard going into 2nd (any condition), grind into third (any condition) figured out how not to. Cannot downshift at all unless under 25 MPH in any gear. My SHO is in the shop now getting a clutch TOB, and some other stuff as well as syncromesh for no extra charge thumbs_u . I will post back here with my results as I should be getting my baby back in the next 2-3 days. :D :D :D :D

No Doubt anyone can miss a shift, but he probobly missed more shift in that car alont, then in all of his other cars (he has had over 25, 17 of them were manuals) Combined! lol

I just got my car back today! :D :D :D :D I got a clutch, TOB , presure plate, axle seals, the fork the TOB rides on,and syncromesh. The clutch was gone, there were 6 teeth off of the PP, the TOB was gone along with the fork, and the seals look badly. I must say it engages much much lower in the travel of the pedal(from what I remember). There has been no grinding of any kind, but I think either I need a rebuild or this syncromesh isn't as good as I hoped/everyone says it would be. It is probally the 1st of the 2. It is not as hard to get into any gear, esp. 1st and it ruquires no special technique to shift into third. All in all, I am very hapy, even tho it dropped my piggy bank. just my.02
