So I was cruising down the freeway when I heard a loud "crack" and fluid and smoke started billowing out from behind the car. Turns out it was the transmission. The problem is I don't know what caused it. So I took out the transmission and this is what I found...

A big hole in the case...

Closer look at the hole.
FILE0052

The clutch looked perfectly fine and happy.

So after seeing this I have no idea what could have caused this. Does anybody have any ideas?

Typ diff pin failure! Sorry!!
do a search
there are 2 short diff pins & 1 long diff pin in the Differential. they are held in place with a roll pin. when a roll pin breaks the pin spins & eventually ejects. common causes can be burnouts & one wheel peels around a corner. this puts a lot of stress on the spider gear held by the diff pin.

The big gear you see there is the differential. I'm going to go with blown diff pin.

:boohoo:That's a real bummer. BTDT.

When you get your replacement MTX, get the diff REINFORCED!!!!!

This is cheap and easy to do. There are a few member's on here (like me) that offer this service.

The CORRECT way to permanently fix the problem is a Quaife or Wave Trac diff.

Get the SHONut ceramic throw out bearing, new axle seals, replace your rear main whilst in there, check to see if your flywheel needs resurfacing, subframe bushings (if not already replaced), reinforced tranny and motor mounts, wheel bearings..

There's a lot you can do for preventive maintenance while the car's apart. I'd take advantage of it.

*edit

And to the OP...that hole ain't that big. My last one had fist sized holes on BOTH sides. After your 4th or 5th diff pin grenades, it becomes routine and you don't even think about it anymore.

No. Other than fitment during reassembly as noted above. There should be a saved thread or two about doing this somewhere.
