I am planning to replace my transmission sometime soon and need some advice from those who have done it before. I won't be using a regular hoist of a cradle jack. Is there an effective method of doing this "on the ground"?
Is it better to drop the subframe with the engine and trans mated or drop the subframe with the engine and trans supported?
Ant helpfull advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

It can be done on the ground, but just make sure you have a transverse engine support and a real lowboy tranny jack. Support the engine, remove the subframe and R&R the tranny. There's a whole lot more, but basically that's what you'll be doing. The Helms has a pretty throrough step-by-step.

Its not impossible to do it on the ground but if there is a local place around that rents lifts I would look into that...it makes it much, much, much easier. Good luck Nick..:thumb:

Nick,

I have a tranny jack (lowboy) that we can use with your car on tall jackstands. I also have engines supports for the Gen 1 and Gen 2s, I don't know if they will fit the Gen three. I can always weld up another set.

Sweet, thanks Tom. Any ideas for the next meet BTW. It may be a while untill I get a tranny but not too long. I just got ANOTHER new job @ Sanderson Ford in Peoria. I will probably be able to get a trans close to cost.

I havne't seen Tom's engine supports, but if they work on a V6 SHO they should work on a V8 SHO since we use the same brace for both.

This is what we use:

Oh, and anyone using this or any similar support on a SHO motor, never use the hooks; sling the chains over the bar.

That is what my tranny guy used when I had my tranny rebuilt a year ago. Worked like a charm

Mine are just pieces of deep uni-strut with legs welded onto them. The legs fit the taper of the gen 1/2 hood rails.

No, but I can take some for you. Anything in particular you want to see?

Tom

BTW, I love your Gen 3.:dribble:

Just an overall of it, doesn't need to be on a car. Just wanted to see a different way of doing it besides the "recommended way" and the "SHO way"

Thanks, can't wait to get her back on the road. The pump shaft decided it was going to be more efficient in 2 pieces rather than 1. Heh...

Ok, I'll be driving out to Dooleyville to have my tranny replaced :) I can make a weekend out of it, while staying at Brian's place in Prescott Valley.
