92sho with 5 speed transaxle need to fill fluid but can't find any of what's call for so the guy at the parts store hooked me up with CASTROL TRANSMAX DEXRON -VI MERCON LV. Can I safely use this in lue of the factory's call for fluid ?

As always thank you all for your in put

If you do a search on this forum for "mtx tranny fluid", a bunch of threads come up showing what others have used

I have used Redline MTL with good results and easy shifting. The Dexron will work but the Ford type F is only recommended for power steering. I have never used it in trans.

I was about to recommend Redline MTL myself but you beat me to it  I used MTL in several other cars with manual transmission, fantastic gearbox oil if you want easier shifts.

Just changed out my fluid, can't remember what I had in it but replaced with Redline MTL. Shifting great so far.

Probably not the smartest option.. but i was always taught to put the same stuff in an mtx transmission that you put in the engine

Unless they changed it for different years, my '94 manual says to use Mercon.
But if you're gonna be racing or anything, I'd read some of the other threads to see if there's a better fluid to use for more specific scenarios. Mercon is pretty thin for something being used basically as a gear ****.

Did the forum really censor l o o b? Guess I'll have to install my shaft dry

You put engine oil in the transmission? I've never heard of that.
Something my father taught me, and he got it from his brother, a 70 year old tractor mechanic

I have only had 1 out of like 7 transmissions die on me, and I'm pretty sure it was the previous owner that killed it

The Japanese are like that. Trans. and power steering fluids are the same. All 3 of my Japanese powered cars are like that including the SHO.
