While doing my clutch replacement, it was discovered that the local Ford dealership failed to install the 2 lower tranny to oil pan bolts. Is it possible to use bolts from a hardware store or is it best to find a replacement from a donor car? If available from the hardware store, what size bolts are needed? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Same thing has happened to my SHO twice, even when properly torqued and a little loctite. Lost the bolts and found some laying around that went right in, so I don't know what size they are. Maybe M10 X 1.25? shrug

I yanked a couple today, and they should still be laying under the car. I'll check tomorrow and get you the thread size. Any good grade 8.8 metric bolt would be more than sufficient.

Tranny should be going back in today. Does anyone have the correct size bolt? Anyone have extra ones laying around for a fair price? Thanks.

You can get them from a hardware store, cheap!

Sorry no one has helped you out on it, but I'll go out there in the cold weather and pull one out to measure for you. thumb It seems I go down there to re-tighten every here and there since they work their way out. I'm sure they were put back in by the dealer, but worked loose theirselve like mine did twice.

It'll be posted shortly! thumb

Okay, here it is! What I pulled out of my trans to oil pan bolt on the MTX:

3/8 X 1.00

Now, that might and might not be what was in there to begin with, but mine went in easy like it came right out of there to begin with. If you want to be safe, go ahead and get both:

M10 X 1.00 & 3/8 X 1.00

The 3/8 is just slightly smaller in diameter than the M10(10mm). So IF it is suppose to be a 3/8 thread, the M10 will be digging in and you don't want that. My 3/8 thread has stayed in longer than the original after a tranny drop.

If you never bought a bolt or don't know measurements of bolts, the sizes I listed are what you'll look for 'exactly' on the cubby boxes of bolt selections. The head size, where the socket goes over, doesn't matter in size. But if your curious, mine is a 14mm with tight fit and some slack with the 9/16.

Good Luck and don't over torque those two bolts as they're easily stripped. I believe the torque rating is like 25 ft.lb. If it's already stripped out in the trans, go get the same thread size, but 1.25 in length to catch remaining thread in the back. Also, it's not a good idea to go ahead and get that size, because if you strip that, your pretty much screwed. thumb

Edit: By the way my bolt is a 5 grade, the one with 3 lines on the bolt head. So that holds up and is proven in my SHO. If you want to be more safe, see if you can get an 8 grade as it has 5 lines. Can't forget this either, it's NOT fine threads. I guess standard threads if that's what you call it, like the others? shrug

It will be a M10*1.00. The reason why you had better luck with the 3/8*24tpi is working better for you is that the its actually something like 3/8*1.058 when convereted to a metric pitch. So you are binding the threads just a little.

Do what? All I gotta say is that 3/8 is smaller than 10mm by 1/32". Plain and simple! Maybe your calculations or whatever your doing are twisted, because 3/8 is 'not' bigger than 10mm.
