So I just finished doing a TON of work ot my 140K '93 ATX. I changed the whole front suspension: springs, struts, 96 brake upgrade, CV joints/axles, tie rod ends...drove the car to get gas (approx. 1 mile) and after filling up and trying to start the car it wouldnt go into gear. when i would press the gas, the speedo and tach would move, but the car wouldnt. is the tranny dead? did i screw up the CV install? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a CV did not get fully seated in the trans and has popped back out. Should be an easy fix!

Agreed. If the speedometer is indicating speed you are fine. Simply push the halfshaft back in and make sure it snaps.

Also, make sure you replace the snap rings on the halfshaft. They are not reusable.

the new cv/halfshafts came with new snap rings...i read a few posts and ensured that they were on the new ones when i picked em up.

so you think its just the halfshafts...i merely have to push it in...that would make me a LOT happier than replacing the trans...

why does the speedo continuing to work signify that it is the half shafts...just curious?

When one of the halfshafts pops out, it allows the differential to spin, and because the speedo gear is driven off the Diff, it registers speed.

ok...so i fixed the problem...and yes you guys were right, the half shaft was the culprit...thanks for the help. unfortunately, it did not solve my problem. i am still hearing a clunk sound when turning left and accelerating. i thoght it was the cv joint, but now i am sur eit is not. i think it might be the ball joint or the tension arm that connects to the frame (or one of its corresponding bushings). any suggestions? if you need a more detailed explanation i am willing to provide as much info as possible. thanks in advance!
