ok here's the deal.....i will go 65 and above and nail it.....the OD stays on and doesnt kick down a gear? what in the **** is wrong with it? a ASAP response would be nice thanks

Exactly what he said. My stock ATX lost 3rd gear one day on the highway, the CEL light did not come on but when I checked my codes I had a 3rd gear failure code. Which was the beginning of the end for my tranny. Basically, you are either looking at a new VSS, or a new/rebuilt tranny.

I'll share the above sentiments, though it's very rare for the computer to throw a code for anything other than a Vehicle Speed Sensor failure. Lucky for this is an easy problem to test.
Maintain a constant 60mph and tap the brake pedal without engaging the brakes. That should instantly disengage the torque converter lock-up. If the torque converter un-locks, look at the VSS for as your problem.
You're also looking for a 452 code.

ok here's another ?.....how hard and how much does it cost for a rebuild.....also...it has done this before but all of a sudden it will work....how do i check my codes....sorry im a fairly new sho owner

My 93 was doing the same thing, turned out to be the VSS. Had I tried, apparently another tell-tale sign is that your cruise control wont function when the variable speed sensor needs to be replaced.
Sorry I cant offer any DIY information, it sounded like more of a PITA then I wanted to experience so I took it in for the work, I cant remember what the labor cost but the sensor is around 50 - 60 dollars. Still even with labor much cheaper than a rebuild.

Would a bad VSS cause such symptoms as...
When I wait at a stop light for a long while after the car has warmed up, I give it gas once the light changes, and then 1st gear will hold out a lot longer than usual and then slam into 2nd, soon followed by 3rd and 4th very quickly and abruptly.
It will do this that one or maybe a second time and then the car drives fine.

but this latest set of problems leads me to believe the the tranny is indeed on the way out. I have burned up my fair share and usually VSS causes the car to "jump" from gear to gear. It also tries to get into the next gear really quickly after you launch. Slam shifts and the transmission trying to "find" the gear are usually signs of tranny failure. Sorry. :headbang:

Shofun that last set of symptoms was not related to fast95atx's post it was from aaronbiza who should probably start his own post.
But to answer aaronbiza's question, when my VSS was out it did not affect my 1-2 shift, only the 3-4 shift, it did not want to come out of O/D when I would try to "pass" someone or floor it. However when my TSS was no longer functioning It affected the 1-2 shifts resulting in hard shifts that felt like the trans was hanging up in first and slamming into 2nd gear. It would only happen when the car was warmed up. It would not happen initially on a cold start but after 10-20 minutes of driving it would act up. As far as the quick shift changes through your 3-4 gears I dont know.
The TSS (part # F1DZ*7M101*A) was 24.29 at the dealer and is a snap to install through the wheelwell.
Initially I didnt get a code but eventually one came up for the TSS Sorry I cant remember what it was.

I appologize, I should have started a new post, however, thank you for your help. Can anyone provide instructions for replacing the TSS, which I assume means Turbine Speed Sensor?

TSS? I have a 2-1 bump when I'm slowing to a stop that dosen't show up until the tranny is warm.

The TSS is located just above the driver side halfshaft where it meets the side of the transmission block. It has a couple of wires going to it from the engine bay. It has one small hex screw holding it in to where its plugged into the trans.
You need to remove the wheel, locate and unplug the sensor and remove the screw. You will have to pry out the sensor, being careful not to slip and tear the CV boot. Thats it. Install the new one in reverse order. I used a 1/4 inch drive with a flex extension to remove the hex screw and made easy work of it.
Dont forget to clear your codes and reset your idle when you are finished (as with any sensor replacement)

When my TSS was faulty I didnt have any problems that I noticed on the downshifts from second to first.
