for a while now the tranny has been noisy on cold starts. usually a kind of knocking that goes away with the clutch pedal depressed.

just today though while i had the radio turned up a bit the pedal felt really strange when i was coming off the highway and when i turned the music off i heard a grinding/marbles type of sound in the tranny.

with the clutch pedal down sometimes you can feel some stuff rolling around inside there against the clutch fork i guess.

it also screetches pretty good out of gear.

could this be something as simple as a TOB or more serious probably?

also, what are the chances of it totally dying on me or simply blowing up if i continue to drive it for short trips till i repair it?

high mileage '94 mtx.

i'm guessing its been at least 60k since the last clutch job.. the clutch pedal seems to be a little stiffer also now.

what are my chances of making it south of the border to get the car worked on? is it basically a time bomb ready to blow at any moment now, or do i still have a few clicks from this stage if it is the TOB.

cause sometimes it sounds BAD.. and sometimes not so much.

just dont was something to catch in the gears and bust the whole system leaving me stranded.

The TOB (throw out bearing) is outside of the "wet" part (where the gears are) of the tranny. It is what presses on the fingers of the pressure plate to disengage the clutch. If it fails completely you won't be able to disengage the clutch.

if one or some of theose fingers get busted.. where do they most likely rest? do they begin rolling around in the wet park where the gears reside or more toward where the clutch fork is only.
