how in the world do you get the gasket material out of the filter housing once you remove the filter??????? I read where it is advised to use a screwdriver/ needlenose pliers... but I am having NO luck (I broke off the tip of my small flathead trying to bend/pry on the gasket)... any advice????

I cut mine off. On my friends 2000 SE I was able to pull it off with needle nose.

i went in there with a flat screwdriver with tape around the tip as a buffer.
the orange rubber material melts to the inside of the orifice.

Seeing how this is a dirty job, I gladly paid the 10 bucks labor my dealer wanted to change the filter and install a new pan gasket. Also had the tranny flushed and was out the door for about 100 bucks. Sorry David, I know that doesn't answer or help you on your question, so here's ----->

Use a bigger screw driver. You will notice the old filter has no gasket or ring and the new one does. The old aluminum ring will bend in and then is easily removed.

well, I went with the bigger screwdriver, and finally got it off... but I sure did manage to booger up the inside wall of the filter housing. Is this something to worry about?
Also, I noticed there were lots of burrs all over the surface of the exposed tranny (pan removed)... is this normal?
