For anyone with their transmission out of the car….Now is a good time to swap out and change that transmission filter. In the future we need to do a lot more threads and write ups on working on the transmission, how to remove it on a lift and jack stands.
When I first opened my transmission I was very intimidated about touching anything in there. The fear of the unknown can make a lot of us timid. Well since opening the transmission for a second time to remove my welded differential and put in the TC LSD differential, I decided to go ahead and change the filter too.
It’s extremely easy. The oil pump is held on by 3 (8mm) bolts. I used my new digital 3/8 digital torque wrench to determine their set torque specs. 9ft/lbs.
once unbolted, it’s simply lifts up and at an angle and comes off with the filter attached.
As you can see the magnet is pretty nasty with metal
Here is the part numbers for the new filter and seal, which if you notice are also the same parts for the GM 6T70/75
Removal of the filter is easy, slides off with a little force. Then put the new seal in first
Then attach the new filter.
Reinstallation is the reverse order. Slightly angle the filter in first and slowly lower the pump onto the chain and gears. Torque the 3(8mm) bolts to 9ft/lbs.
wallah! I’m going to use my mighty vac and remove all the leftover fluid in here, maybe about a pint combined between the two sections of the transmission. That’s it!
With so many parts the same as the 6T70/75 I wonder if there’s a built 6T70/75 already out there and what if at all would need to change to get it into our platform? If our bell housing bolt configuration is different…I wonder if it would be just a simple…swap of the bell housing and if everything internally is the same, just the outer casting different? Hmmmmm?!
