No, not T and A, talking engine pulling here. Got the upper intake off now working on other bodily attachments.

Which way should this engine come out, top or bottom?

What are the pitfalls I should look out for?

cool, there's already a write-up on SHO Phoenix's site too.

I've never dropped a subframe to remove an engine before though

...i was curious as to what this thread would be about.

I've taken my 3.2 & ATX out the top twice. Seems easy enough.

If your looking at removing JUST the trans the bottom is the best, via dropping the subframe of course. Honestly I have taken two engines out through the top. It would be easier via the bottom though if you had a way to get the car high enough.

ATX or MTX I think the top is better, it's safer IMO and you don't lose your alignment. Iv'e done it both ways, but havign changed every drive train part top and bottom on atx and mtx, I can say top is best. The only time I do it out the bottom is if I'm redoing or installing the entire drivetrain and front suspentiuon for some reason.

As for the other "question", I agree with scott, bottom is best:evilgrin:

Top, then? I really don't need the transmission out to get at that little bolt that holds the speedo gear in with the engine out of the way. So from the top, pretty much the same crap I need to take off the engine either way, with the addition of the hood. Alright, I'm going to work, later.

BTW, need a new crankshaft (which I know is forged now :) ) so know where to get one from?

Do the trans and engine get pulled together, coming out of the top? Or just the engine?

I've done both.

MTX you can pull out the top very easily. ATX takes a little work, but can be done.

I don't think the atx is bad either, I can do an atx trans swap in a day w/o trouble, taking the entire drivetrain out the top. From running dirving car, back to running driving car. I think top the the best way to change an engine or trans.

I just took the engine out of my '97 yesterday from the bottom. I use two floor jacks under the front doors and an engine hoist connected to the bumper.

Using a dolly I lower the body down with the jacks so the subframe is on the dolly, take out the subframe bolts then raise the body with the engine hoist.

Just do it slow so you can see where all the items are that need removed.

Currently hung up on a coolant pipe going to the heater core on the firewall. Y-pipe and starter off trying to figure out what's next.

Does the radiator need to come out?

As far as top or bottom goes, still leaning on top since it's what I'm used to.

If you pull it out the top, you can slap the suspension back together and move the car around.

If you take the subframe out, you'll need some sort of dolly under the nose of the car if you want to move it.

Careful, those heater cores won't take much abuse. I usually pull the radiator because it gives you a few more inches of wiggle room and I don't have to worry about punching a hole in it. Not necessay, but it doesn't take much to pull it.
