Hi all my 92 makes a rattleing noise from the tanny area when the clutch is out. If I press the clutch in it goes away. Also the clutch grabs really high and feels werid compared to my 95. My question is what is it and will it last untill spring with only driving about 2-4k?

Sounds like a TOB and clutch issue combined to me. As to whether it'll last, I don't think anyone can give you an exact answer. It will depend a lot on how you drive, though that is not a very definitive answer.

The throwout bearing may be on its last legs, but this condition is caused by excessive slippage between the TOB and the pressure plate fingers. The slippage is allowed by a slack clutch cable that has not had the tension set periodically as required by the owner's manual. The stock TOB will not last forever, but it can last longer if the clutch cable is checked for tension every oil change. First try pulling up on the clutch pedal with about 10 pounds of force. If you hear any clicks the cable had some slack removed.

Ok those are the answers I expected. I know the tension on the cable is correct. I wasn't going to drive the car hard at all since its got 173K. Thanks.

I agree with Beth and Scott, since I have experienced this problem as well.

When you decide to replace that TOB, do yourself a favor and purchase the ceramic bearing version from www.shonutperformance.com You'll be happy you did thumb

After recently replacing the clutch in my 89, we found where the tob had worn quite a groove on the shaft. Over the past year, I was experiencing random shifting problems and rattling from the tob. After getting everything reassembled, I am completely amazed at the difference in driving characteristics of my car. The clutch pedal feels perfect and no longer catches on the groove. Shifting is so much easier! Being a tightwad, I tried to stretch out this repair till it was physically required. In hindsight, I should have replaced the clutch/tob when I first started experiencing problems. What a difference!

oh_SHO, a quick an easy was to tell if the TOB is causing that rattle is to have someone hold the clutch pedal up (as if doing the self adjusting procedure) and then taking the TOB release arm and pulling it towards the front of the car. This will take the TOB out of contact with the pressure plate. If it stops making the noise it's safe to assume a TOB/PP problem. If it continues to make the noise it's got to be something internal in the transmission. Thanks to Josh T. for this quick and easy TOB check.
