Can you post a picture? I believe the color lines are tread depth indicators.

Yup most tires are not made in the USA anymore. They could be coming from Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, China, UK, what have you. First time I've heard of Romania in the mix tho, and that too with a prominent tire like the Contis.

Not surprised at all. Romania is to Europe what Mexico is to the US, cheap labor. A lot of German companies outsource manufacturing to Romania. The German automotive supplier I used to work for did the same thing.

The color lines are NOT wear indicators.

However, they are just factory check marks that identify the tire has passed each step of the inspection process of their manufacture.

On the Conti's specifically, the wear indicators are molded into the tread itself. They literally read "D W S".

When the 'S' has worn away, the tire is no longer suggested for use in snow. The 'W' no longer for wet roads. Finally, the "D" no longer good for even on dry roads.

Those color lines will wear off rather quickly.
