Maybe I do live under a rock? Sorry I don't know all tire specs and characteristics by heart like you. It's not like the F1 doesn't have threads like a drag radial. The tire looks like it should work. I am buying Michelins before winter gets here.

We just got done with a Nissan Minivan that had run-flats. Those tires are a prison a$$ rape. And then to have to deal with the non-winter friendly F1...hard to swallow.

I don't want winter wheels. They look like garbage and they handle like garbage as well. I paid money for these 20s, and I want them on the car at all times.

I don't want the hassle of having to change out my rims twice a year. I'm willing to give up a little handling for that.

That being said, Cooper has a very high rated and cost effective tire. Rated at the top by Consumer Reports and Consumer Digest

I'm trying to get the dealer to order me the Cooper Zeon RS3/A (245/45R20) (500 AA A)

They cost about 644 on Treaddepot.com for the set.

I bought All Seasons myself for a "winter" tire for my SVT Focus. The reason was, I drove about a thousand miles a week. I didn't want the all the downsides of winter tires for the 98 - 99 percent of the time I didn't "need" to have winter traction.

A good all season was the best I needed. If the roads were that bad that I needed winter tires to drive in it, I wasnt going to go to work anyway :)

I still vote for separate summer & winter tires. Luckily, the PO had a 2nd set of wheels with Blizzaks for my Focus SVT, and loved 'em.

Been doing the two-tire-sets for years now. Only way to go, IMO. Winter tires are good for all conditions, even cold, dry pavement. We don't get a lot of snow here. I drive two blocks to a state highway, which is one of the first plowed, and it's maybe wet with a bit of slush at worst.

No a/s tire matches true winter tires in cold conditions. Some winter tires are more snow-oriented, but Blizzaks, Hankook Icebears (which I had on my AWD Legacy GT) work GREAT. Another great one is the Nokian WR. Really a Scandanavian a/s tire with a M&S rating. Many SHO (and Suby) guys use them, and they worked very well on my wife's former Del Sol.

If you live anywhere it gets well below freezing....winter tires!!

First off, winter wheels can look as good as the selection available. And you say they handle like garbage? Sounds like those Coopers handle like garbage compared to proper Max Performance summer tires...

Why didn't you get the base SHO and buy the wheels separately? Then, you could save money by not getting the PP and thus not wasting its abilities?

I have a set of OEM PP 20" rims (take offs) coming and ordered the Pirelli Scorpion Snow and Ice (245-45-20) tires and will have them on by the end of week. Anyone have experience with the Scorpion Snow and Ice tires on the OEM PP rim?

So what happened? Did those Consumer Report tires make you happy, or what?

As for looking like garbage, I think the TSWs I had for track wheels look OK for my snow tires...

Wheel choice is really personal so I never comment on someone's choice because they would not have spent the money if they didn't like what they were getting. That said, I purchased a set of Cooper RS-3A's. About 5K miles on them now and 2 winter storms so far. No complaints. They seem to work easily as well as the factory Michelins when they were new. The Michelins got hard toward the end and I replaced them at 50K miles. So I have to reserve final judgement on the Coopers until I rack up more miles.

Just went through this on mine as the original Michelins were pretty much shot at 51k. It wasn't till one snow where I almost crashed 2x that I decided I needed tires NOW!

Ended up with the Michelin Primacy MXV4's. Yes, they were expensive at ~$250 per tire, but looking at the 60k warranty on them makes them cheaper per mile than pretty much anything out there. The others I was looking at were either no warranty of 40k. Doing a cost per mile (at the stated warranty) these ended up the cheapest total package.

Hopefully I won't have to do this again till well over 100k! :)

I'm in Austin, TX, so no real concerns about needing winter tires here :), but I can see why someone would not want the hassle of switching wheels twice a yr. The Taurus trunk is huge, but can you get 4 wheels/tires in it, to take down to the local service shop? Doing a swap yourself at home would have to be a major PITA if you don't have a lift, and you still need a spot to keep a stack of wheels/tires when they aren't on the car. Mines a non-PP SHO, so I don't even know why I'm reading this thread!

I swap all my vehicles to winter tires/wheels twice a year with a floor jack and a 4-way lug wrench. It takes a half hour at most. It is kind of a hassle to store the unused sets, but worth it. The tire shops charge a min of $60 for a dismount/remount-much more with the silly tire pressure monitors it's double that! When I can do it myself for a half hours easy work and save a couple hundred $/yr each vehicle that's easy money.

Two winters of rain, snow and slush have proven the oem Michelins to be great tires. And still going strong with 44,000 miles.

I'll replace the Goodyear F1's with a set of Continental DWS all season tires when they get wore down. I'm on my second set of DWS tires on my Mustang and I'm very happy with them outside of getting more then 2-3 inches of snow on the ground...then I'll take my girls Escape to work if I need to :)

I live in Chicago and have the same issue. PP with summer only tires. Solution: buy a winter beater! Forget the snow traction issues, how about the layer of salt. Take the $1000 plus to get tires or tires/wheels for the winter and and get something that runs. Store it during summer or sell to get all or some money back, then get another beater next winter. Buy, Sell, Repeat!

Conti DWS only weakness seems to be responsiveness. Same with their DW's

My Michelin Pilot Super Sports are much more responsive than my Conti DW's. (both summer tires- big difference in turn in handling)
Depending on the amount of snow, I would possibly look at some of the more responsive A/S tires that may not be as good in heavy snow conditions. A/S are all compromise, so you have to look at what your overall goals are.

Unfortunately we can't spec our cars with our choice of tires from factory.

Another option is to buy used wheels and the best buy A/S relative to price/rating. I believe 18" wheels will fit on PP and non-PP. Lots of vehicle wheels that have bp & offsets that will fit our vehicles, including Mustangs.
