The occasional noisy racket I could hear seemed to be coming from the rear timing chain. I finally got the nerve up to dive into the top end and check into it. The front one appears to be ok... I guess. How do you check the rear one seeing it is upside down.?? I have more pics to post too.
Also, I am well into my second treatment of AutoRX, I am disappointed with the brown tarnish that STILL remains. I don't want to be greedy, but I am thinking of taking the manufacturer up on his money back guarantee :(
Any input is well appreciated! thumb

Look for play / slack in the chain through the little "window" on the side of the metal guide, especially as you move the cam (1 1/16" wrench, gently). If the chain has slack, and moves up noticeably when you move the exhaust cam, that's a "slapping" sound on the metal guide as the intake cam "snaps" the chain like a whip.

sunny San Juan Bautista,
Try wiping the varnish off with a clean rag. The inventor of Auto-RX told me that sometimes crud will still be on the non-lubricated surfaces but will come off easily with a rag. Anyways, if you're not happy with the product definately take him up on his money back guarantee. He made it very clear to me that if for whatever reason I'm not satisfied get my money back. Even if I'm satisfied on one vehicle and not the other, get the money back for the treatment used on the vehicle where it just didn't work out.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to add. My truck is just finishing up its first treatment of Auto-RX. Power is up. Oil consumption is down to about 1 quart every 750 miles (MUCH better than the one quart every 200-300 miles, enough to make a difference is lowering octane demand). We'll see if that holds up and I'm going to be more careful about measuring the exact oil consumption for the next few thousand miles to be sure.

I bought my sho with 144K on it... with an unknown maint. history. It now has 159K. For the last 15K it has had only Castrol (changed every 3K... and sometimes MORE frequent). I started AutoRX at 156K.
OK, thanks for the input guys. What exactly is the 1 1/16 wrench going to, to gently move the camshaft?
I haven't diligently looked at everything yet, but I have seen lots of the cam lobes with the "tree ring wear". Also I just noticed the shims under the cam lobe (top right in the pic., next to the timing chain) do NOT have much oil on them. Kinda looks dry shrug
Here is the front TCT:

Yes, the wrench fits the camshaft itself. Only use an adjustable wrench if you don't have the right size. :D

Your engine looks typical for 159k. Its old & probably used hard. it could last a long time if you can live with the oil usage. don't waste your money on crankcase cleaners-they are ********. Why would one want to circulate all that varnish crud through the oil system on a old motor if you could remove it with an additive-it can't be done with out disassembly. leave the varnish where it is. its stuck on there very well.

Actually, I'm working on a 95 w/ 140k now that's the cleanest I've ever seen at pretty much any mileage. Oil does make a difference.

Rick, actually I tried wiping with my finger, and it didn't come off...is it possible that the cam area could be starving a bit for oil...thus AutoRX cannot do a good cleanup there? If so, wouldn't the oil pressure guage read real low? Mine reads somewhat normal:
9-13 at hot idle (it doesn't get below 11 often!)
about 42 psi at 3k rpms.

oh ye of doubting the cleaning powers of Auto-Rx look at these. These are pics of my heads at my 60k (well 73k) after just one Auto-RX treatment. My car was old man/woman owned, (83years old to be exact) bogged constantly, and given 5k mile oil changes with Quaker State of all *****. When I first looked in the valve covers after buying it I was horrified, cause it was about as brown and varnished as the pics that were displayed earlier in this thread. Anyone that says that Auto-Rx is ********, is full of it themself, the stuff works hands down for 90% of the applications, as long as physical damage hasn't occured. But some ppl will always believe just cause it works that doesn't change the belief that it is some sort of "snake oil". Closemindedness on things like that means more wasted time with repairing mechanical damage in an engine that could have been cleaned up. Just like so many other things SHO related ppl crawl out of the woodwork to say "that won't work" or "it can't be done" This stuff works, and if you're not satisfied then you get your cash back, so whats the harm in giving it a SHOt?

the exhaust cam in the rear bank is the cam closest to the firewall, right? I moved IT very minimal, and saw
slack in the chain. Is a little slack normal? Or should there be zero tolerance?

I don't know, mine had a little slack in it even after I replaced it. Maybe it was still bad. shrug The noise you had would come and go right?

Yes it comes and goes.
Do you still have the nasty tick?
Did you replace the tensioner with a brand new one?

Also, I do not have the car jacked up. Do I need to? When I put a wrench on the camshaft, do I pull it towards me (does it matter which direction I try to "gently " rotate it)?
Also, is SOME slack normal? Or is there zero tolerance?

I see the need for shim work. I don't under stand how you ignorant fools think a bottle ten dollar cleaner that absolutly will not remove the varnish with out taking every seal out of the motor feel the need to kiss the ass of the vendor ripping you off! Hey that ten dollars will buy you a oil change.
