timing chain heartbreak

Hey guys im new to the forum, and a new SHO owner too. but just fyi i did my research before i got one. Here's my dilemma, i had some bad rattling sound coming from the top side of my engine, so i took my intake manifold and valve covers off(plug well seals were fried, couldn't even see the spark plugs) well, come to find out the rear timing chain tensioner has gone bad. I've called around to find another one and i cant find one :madflame: can anyone help me out where to find one? thanks

Something you might also try is taking the tensioner apart and cleaning it if the pad on top is still good.

I would take your tensioner apart and clean out crap inside of it first. I would also get some new chains. The chains strech over time and even with a new tensioner they can still rattle. If cleaning and new chains don't fix it then get a new tensioner. I can point you in the correct direction to get a new tensioner but they are not the cheapest things in the world.

Just curious to know if replacement pads are available if the rest of the tensioner is in good shape?

No, you have to buy the entire unit. Deep grooves are not a sign that the pad is bad, the pad itself should be good for 300k miles or more. If it's worn to the metal or broken free from the metal it should be replaced other than that it's OK.

thanks for the replys guys, i took it off and sprayed it w/carb cleaner, poped right loose. now i just need a battery tray.......

I need to do the same thing. What is entailed in getting the tensioner out? Do you just remove the intake and cam cover, then the tensioner.....or do you need to removed the timing belt and a cam to get the tensioner out?

All i can tell you is what i did. what did was i took off the intake manifold. then the valve covers (cause i didnt know which one was bad. then i took off the rear exhaust timing chain sprocket, and then removed the tensioner. but lord help , do NOT drop the bolt in the head

I just did this project yesterday. dont take the sprockets off without securing the camshafts. If they turn, you are screwed. The tensioner wont come out without removing the sprocket (or at least one of them). Not hard at all.
