I have a 94 ATX. It has roughly 116k on it, and I highly doubt it has ever had the valves adjusted. From what I can tell it runs pretty good and it shifts quite smoothly, but the heads seem to tick a lot. I'm not sure how much is normal. Could this be excessive valve clearance? Thanks. -Joe

Might be the cam chain tensioners, the chains slapping the valve covers. Get a screw driver and put it on the end of the valve cover where the tensioner is and stick your ear on the handle end see if you can hear anything. If the chain is hitting the cover you will know, and maybe just give it a little gas until you hear the sound.

timing belt tensioner?

Since yours an ATX you might want to check out timing belt tensioner... it operates by self contained hydraulic... when it gets worn out and lose hydraulic pressure, It will start to make ticking noise. I had same problem at 130k. I thought it was upper head area until narrowed down to middle of engine. Hope that helps.

Have you found the source of the ticking?
I ask because my 93 ATx does the same thing.
At about 1000 to 1500 PRM the tick is noticeable.
Also when I let off the gas I hear it from the timing cover area.
I'm sure it's the timing belt or tensioner.

What did you find?
Thanks... :)

Have not found it yet. My car is overwhelmed with problems. I'm hoping it goes away after I do a 60k this summer.
