ticking from the back valve cover

So I got a ticking noise comming from the valve cover near the firewall, sometimes its loud sort of like a diesel engine and in times I can bearly hear it. Any ideas? Car has 154k miles running really good.

My noise was coming from the same area and found out it was the timing belt tensioner. Get you a stethoscope from Harbor Freight, about 5.00 bucks and listen to different areas. My noise would start after you pulled from a stop light then quieten down. So let the engine warm up and use the stethoscope to probe around for the noise. Use your hand or some help from someone to work the throttle and you most likely will hear the noise as the the engine idles down. At least that was the way I found my noise problem.
