loud ticking sound from start all the way thru the rpm band. no oil light. just sounds bad. pulled intake and valve covers, no ejected shim or other problems that can be seen. mech. says he will have to pull the oil pan to check the bottom end. Is there any point in doing that? can the engine be saved? help:hail:

I'd check the easy stuff first. Like the timing belt. Unscrew the plastic cover and peak down in there for anything out of the ordinary, like a frayed timing belt.

Richard, your mech needs to pinpoint the sound before cracking it open, if at all possible. With a stethoscope, it's much easier to do this.

If the sound is coming from the top end, feel the cam covers (bulged area), if you can "feel" the tick, it's chain slap & the tensioners / cam chains need to be addressed.

If it's in the pan only (& not so much the trans case), it's possibly bearings.

If it's in the front / dampener area, could be a broken / worn woodruff key.

If it's engine-front, could be a failed timing belt tensioner / belt slap.

If it's in the oil pan & trans case, could be throw-out bearing / clutch-related (for 5-speed).

If it's in the exhaust Y-Pipe / cats, you could have a broken-up catalyst brick or an exhaust leak.

Check compression, make sure you haven't blown a HG cylinder-to-air too.

As you can see there are just too many things to throw time & money at without nailing down a target first. If your mech does dive into a certain area, negotiate for other items to be addressed at the same time to save labor - example, if you tear apart the timing covers & dive into the tensioner, think about timing belt, front crank seal, crank sensor, water pump, etc.

Good luck!

this may sound stupid but does the sound go away after 4K rpms?
if so,it maybe the small vac canisters that open/close your secondary ports
it happens alot!

but as the above post says,i also recomend checking everything with a
stethoscope

the mech. said he used a scope and figured it was on the rear bank head in the middle piston. he now thinks its the wrist pin. what is a wrist pin? I feel it is top end problem and he is jerking my chain. the sound is lound from 500rpm all the way to 7000rpm. mean tick. would a cam tension or timing tension do this? thanks for the help

That's what holds your piston on the top end of the rod. If it is as loud as you say, and lasts from idle to redline, it may be a wristpin... That would suck. Does it sound like it ticks every time that the piston fires? It gets faster and louder with the RPMs?

I had a tick in my engine.. didnt think much of it and about 3 or 4 weeks later while driving on the highway.. spun a bearing.. ruining my crankshaft and #5 rod

When,(if ever) were the bearings done?? If the sound is coming from one cylinder, and not the front or rear top, I would do the bearings(easy). Way cheaper and safer to eliminate them first, and they need to be done anyway!!:)
