so i put 35$ in the sho today for like to first time i usely just throw 15-20 here and there got omost 9 gals and some what the reason was i do have this leak dont know were its coming from but i had throught the fuel tank for some time now...

so when pulled up from home about 3-4 miles from fill up...(3/4s tank) i figured i would find the leak now.. well i come home get out the car walk around it smell fuel, peek my head under the rear of the car and i see fuel drips from the tank.. well from that angle it looked the be the tank.. if you were sitting in the car it would be the RR corner of the fuel tank...

well im bout to head out there and look more into since i was still in work cloths.

let me know what you guys think it could be.. think my tank has a hole in it?

i did check to see if my car might have had a 18gal tank since i did read alittle about that didnt have a for sure understanding of it but i check mine last time i had it down and i couldnt find any kind of plug or hole near that RR corner..

any ways ill keep you guys informed.. i know there was a few of you out that that was tryin your hardest to help me..

The tank is SHO-specific, but shouldn't be any more expensive. Spectra makes them aftermarket, I want to say average cost is about $100-$120.

A hole in your gas tank can most certainly cause one or more evap codes.

Look for a local SHO club. Might get a lead on parts cars. There are cars being parted out here on the forum. Might not be worth getting used if shipping is high and the price Chris gave is right.

Contact Bizzy. She's from MI and runs this place. She should have good info. I think there is a Kzoo contingent.

Look in the Great Lakes section for area clubs.

Ray Davis is in Michigan too, north of Detroit. He goes by midnightauto on here. He is getting out of the parts business, but probably still has some stuff laying around.

I took mine of a couple of years ago and saw it was rusting. Cleaned it all off and painted it up.

I don't know why the tank would be SHO specific. AFAIK it is the standard 16 gallon Taurus/Sable tank.

http://discountgastanks.com/search/?/FORD/1997/TAURUS/16_Gal/index.htm

This site list has the SHO and SLO 16 gallon tanks separately but if you look at the Ford part number reference it is the same.

The only difference is the Flex Fuel tank which is 18 gallon and has an extra vapor vent well in it.

IIRC, it's the configuration and/or size of the holes for the EVAP components. We've had SLO tanks delivered and couldn't get the EVAP plumbing installed properly.

I'm trying to remember, but it may be more of a problem with 98&99's than it is with 96&97's.

In any case, a new tank can be had for around $100 and seems like a reasonable solution. If the tank rotted through in one spot, I wouldn't trust the seam or rest of the tank, especially if it's flaking off inside.

I thought the Gen 3 SHO gas tank was 34 1/2 gallons :laugh_ti:
Yeah, that was funny back in like 2000, maybe even 2001. :shakehead Recycling the same old shit over and over ad infinitum really isn't this forum's style. I suspect there are other sites perfectly suited for that kind of drivel.

Yes if you look at the last link I provided it looks like the '96-'97 tanks are different than the '98-'99 ones and there are two listed for the '98-99s 16 gallon tank.

I guess to be sure one has to drop the tank and get the Ford part number off of it.
