Was wondering if I could just get like a ridiculous JBL 8" Sub, and mount it in place of the stock sub? And would it be feasable or should I just get a box? (and yes I know I would use a aftermarket amp)

That's what I was figuring, so that I can get the bass, but not use none on the trunk space... I was going to try to modify the box a little bit to accomadate a JL 10W7 .. (plus a little fabrication of course)

I have a JL 8w6 mounted in the stock box and powered with about 350watts from an Alpine amp. I love the sound, but I desperately need some dynamat.

Sounds pretty good, but probably not as good as it would if the sub had a real box to work with (mdf, not recycled milk jug).

The stock box is actually very rigid. It is similar in construction to a fiberglass enclosure. Anything with bends and fibers in it will be stiff. As a rule, fiberglass boxes need to be only 1/3 the thickness of the same box made from MDF.

I also lined my stock box with dynamat and some polyfil.

I can guarantee you that a a JL w7 will not fit in the box. Even if it did, it would be so retardly cramped, you would have killed the performance of a great sub.

I was thinking of putting a JL 8w6 in the stock box and powering it off a small amp to give me a bit more mid bass.

I did this a couple years ago, but end up going with a 12" sub in a properly sized MDF box as it sounded a lot better.

That looked like a very nice setup in your trunk, jason. If I hadn't have gotten my probe, I was eventually going to lay mine out just like that, with another JBL amp (similar in appearance to my mono amp), but a 4 channel for my speakers. I'm betting that setup didnt sound too bad :thumb:

What I really wanted to do, was have a custom box made and mounted where the stocker is, but have it built to accomidate a 10 inch. Then perhaps make a wall for the rear of the trunk out of plywood, covered in matching carpet..and mount the amps onto that...always looked sweet in my mind.

But now my money goes to another car.

I completely agree! The 10w7 would never fit in the box, it's way too tall. Also the enclosure size of the 10w7 is much bigger then the stock box. The cone would probably hit the bottom of the deck too, since the excursion on the w7's are so long. I seriously doubt an 8w7 would work either.

The 8w6 is great, just make sure you give a clean signal with a good amount of power. I haven't been disappointed yet! You just have to have reasonable expectations for what an 8" sub can provide.

My first SHO came with an 8" MTX Blue Thunder in the stock box. I never really liked the sound, but I knew it had potential. I quickly removed it for 2 10" round Solobarics. They were nice and loud, and clean. It took me 7 years to try the 8" again, and this time it's perfect.

Getting it out

So, maybe this is a dumb question...How do I get the subwoofer box out of my '95? I've removed the 4 nuts at the corners, but it still doesn't drop. It feels like a "collar" of some sort connects the box to the underside of the rear deck (which makes sense). How do I complete the removal? Thanks in advance for you help.

this is what a 10w7 needs to perform properly:

That is my best mans 00 A4 1.8TQM. And it hits hard.

How big is that box, the 10w7 approximately 1.25 cu/ft for a sealed in closure. I had a 5 cu/ft box for my two Vega subs and it needed it.

Thanks. I tried pulling, it didn't come. I wasn't sure if there was some other fastener holding it in place-didn't want to break anything. I'll pull harder!
