THERE GOES WAITING FOR INCOME TAX TIME!

01/01/04 my 184,477 MTX goes boom.

Well more like grinding and the rod shifter moves with great difficulty, grinds/clunks in gear but goes away when I press the clutch in. All I did was go out quickly for 5min at less than 3K revs and ended up driving home half grinding all the way in 2nd gear running some stops just so I wouldnt stop and get stuck.

Found a local MTX with 48K for $470 guess i'll be rebuilding that and saving my current 184K case for future purposes.

I wont exactly know what happened to this tranny until its taken apart, but from the symptoms above what do you guys think it is?

I'm no expert on this, but that's exactly how I would describe the sound I got when my tranny blew, 4 hours after I bought the car I might add :( Mine was the dif pin shooting out after the fluid had drained all the way... the whole bellhousing side of the case was cracked to all h*ll... Get that tranny while the getting is good! Good luck!!!
BTW great way to ring in the new year wink

After reading your post I went out and checked and no puddles under my SHO and case still intact, so if its my diff pin it must've **** my internals and not my case.

Jebus I guess Ive been so lucky my diff pin hasnt gone yet, when my axle popped out (cause the shop didnt put in two of the bolts), it drained all the fluid, only coasted about half a mile though when it happened.

I forgot to add that when it did this I could not get it into 1st and sometimes second... then it would just work for a slight second then not... shrug I also had a loud popping coming from the driver axle(the dif pin going grenaded the dif which grenaded my cv joints)

If you try to put it in first and drive off, will it move? It can be an axle, clutch disc, or bearing. Need more info to 'try' and pin point it.

Sorry to hear. frown

Yes it will still drive in reverse, 1st-2nd, but moving along the neutral "line" horizontally is very HARD like this is something in the way while I am selecting which gear to go in. And the tranny is silight while doing this only pops/grinds/clanks when I release the clutch.

Dont know if that will help you? Is it safe for me to go outside and record it? Or will I cause further damage that way?

Could be a 3/4 synchro issue. If part of the synchro fell down inside the tranny into the shift shaft area it could lodge itself in such a manner that would make shifting impossible. But that is highly unlikely. More than likely you've lost a synchro. You could dare to take audio of it, but like the motor itself, the more you make it do work when it's damaged, the more likely you are to cause further damage.

Are you sure that one or more of the PP fingers didn't break off? That would cause some severe shifting issues if they did.... just a thought.

Good luck with it Edien.

Beth be expecting an email from me :D .

You know what now that you mention it, it quite easily be a PP finger considering my current CenterForce clutch has been through **** over its 24K life. Most recently it survived one motor swap seize at around 60MPH which really glazed nicely, and Fred pointed out some of its weaker points when he was completing a 2nd 3.2L for me the right way :) , which also included serious heating spotting even some on my flywheel which only had about 850-900 on it! Once I gave Fred the ok to install the banged up clutch(it was my choice to do it), he tried to get rid of most of the glazing but of course I still got slippage from it and grabbed very high now.

If it were only a clutch finger what else could it have taken out with it? Not the flywheel please...? I'll guess to say it could even be a sychro considering earlier I was having issues trying to get into 1st and it would sometimes pop back out.

Most of the time the flywheel is spared from what I've seen and read. The PP would have to be replaced and it would also be a good time to replace the TOB just in case, they're cheap enough.

I'll be glad to take a look at the tranny if you find that it needs to be done. You'll find that out once the tranny/clutch is pulled. My days are filled currently to the brim with tranny rebuilds, one got out the door yesterday and Fred's will begin today. Let me know if it comes down to the tranny and we'll address it then.

As always, best of luck with it. I hope you find it to only be a PP problem as that would be a less expensive fix.

What sux is I used the full Ceramic TOB from SHO Nut since 176K and now with 184K so it should hopefully still good? Unless it was installed wrong by the 1st person to touch it which was erik(or even damaged when the 1st 3.2L seized?).

It might be ok to re-use. Best thing to do is when you pull the tranny, shake it to see if it makes any noise. Also spin it to see if it feels smooth or gritty. If it's gritty feeling when spinning I wouldn't reuse it. I sent you a PM with some info that might be helpful.

Like I said before about your hard 1-2 shifting there is probably a problem with the 1-2 synchro. It's possible that the springs and tabs came apart falling into the gear selector plate like Bizzy suggested. Also the grinding pop when you release the clutch could be due to the synchro in pieces. You said you found a MTX tranny with 48K on it for $470? and you're going to rebuild that one? I just bought a tranny that turns out I probably don't need which is getting a rebuild as soon as the parts come on. If you want that one for like $500 LMK.
