I'll try a fluid change. After driving it this morning, I'm thinking a big part of it is that I need to relearn to drive it, and with the way it's geared, I may need to rev up the old Vulcan a bit higher than I was expecting to. I'll give it a few days, and if it doesn't get better with me driving it more, then I'll pull the tranny.

Buddy of mine did the MTX-IV swap in his vulcan powered tempo. He's on here somewhere. Groove83something or other.

According to him (i'm on the phone with him now), the clutch is basically a stock early SHO clutch (9 1/4"). He's thinking along the lines of either the PO of the tranny's lying their ***** off at your, or being a fresh rebuild, there might've been some water gotten into the case and caused a bit o rust and with the fluid and driving it, you're pretty much breaking it back in.

I just got back from driving it about 40 miles or so out in the county. The only gear that gave me any trouble was fourth. After driving it some more now, what it seems like to me is that the tranny is just really picky about what speed you put it in gear at. There would be times when I would try to downshift to fourth, and I could feel that it would not engage, so I would cost down until it would let me into third. Then back up into fourth, and then fifth. Shifting up through the gears was hardly a problem, as long as I let it run up to about 2500 RPM before shifting to the next gear, with the exception of fifth, which was never a problem to get into. Is this normal, or indicative of a problem? Maybe it's like I said, and I just need to relearn to drive with a five speed, and I'm being overly sensitive to it.

I could see maybe some kind of internal rust; The tranny was shipped mostly dry, and I'm pretty sure most of the remaining fluid came out in transit. It sat for a month or so before I did the swap.

Mobil 1 is tranny ambrosia! Installed a drain plug and flushed it out this morning, and hot damn!! Such a difference! I don't have to rev it up to 2500+ to get it into fourth! Although I want to at every shift... Thanks for all the help! Best mod to the Vulcan EVAR!

Well congrats! I'm happy that everything worked out.

My old saying "Mobil 1 is sex-ay" holds true yet again! :woohoo:
