Temp Sending Unit Socket Size

I'm going to try replacing the rear temp sensor (the one that goes to the PCM / has the 2 or 3 prong electrical connector attached). The car is still running warmer than nomral, although it doesn't overheat. The radiator holds pressure, it's full, been burped, fan comes on high when a/c is on, and I already replaced the front single wire temperature sending unit (the one that goes to the gauge).

I got the part on closeout from RA, so I figured I'd try it and see if that did anything. My 18mm, 3/4, and 13/16 sockets are too small. What size is it? I'll go pickup a deep well socket to make removal/installation easier. My sockets don't go up to that size.

I found that a 1" deep-well socket did me just fine.

One inch open ended wrench worked for me. Didnt even drain the coolant.

Thank you, kind sirs. Got a low coolant light today on the way to work. Maybe I'm having ever so slight leaks from the radiator end tanks. Car still will heat up to the top of the N but no more. I plan on replacing this sending unit and installing the correct top radiator hose. Car just hasn't run this warm until recently. I'll figure it out one of these days. My 89 runs alot cooler; either that, or these gauges are just inconsistent and they suck.

You changed the sensor that tells the fans to come on, not the one that controls the guage.

Well if that's your goal, you realize you have the wrong sensor, right? The one in the back of the engine tells the EEC what the coolant temp is. The one in the front, which is a much smaller sensor with a one-wire "top hat" connector, is the one that feeds the instrument cluster. Replacing that one in the back isn't going to do a thing for you.
