Sync Update issue

I was attempting to update my sync to 3.1 on my 2013 SHO . Everything was going fine until I got an error. Searching for USB storage device. It is in a loop and I can't access anything. I tried to disconnect the battery for 15 minutes, but that didn't work. Anyone have a solution?

Did you format the USB stick with the correct filesystem type? I think for the Sync 2 system, it's FAT32.

It said exfat on the SYNC instructions. That's what I formatted it to.
I'm going to try a different USB in a little while.

Second USB didn't work either.

Did you format that second stick to FAT32?

Sync 2 is FAT32 because it's Windows CE.
Sync 3 is exFAT.

Yes. Make sure the usb drive is formatted to Fat32.

When do you get the message, after you plug it in? And is that the exact error message?

I'll reformat to FAT32 and try again. During the update, I got the message searching for USB Storage Device. Then it says it can't find USB and is cancelling update.

Hmmm. Try reformatting it and maybe a different drive altogether.

Let the car run the whole time it's doing its update.

The reformatted drive got me out of the loop at least. I still wasn't able to update. I'll double check everything and try again after the weather clears.

I've been having some issues with my system lately. Voice calling doesn't work and it will randomly glitch to where volume control doesn't work. What improvements does Sync 3.1 have?

Oh, and can you load the update if you have a tune/3-bar installed? Or does it need to be put back to stock?

That is a good question. From the owners account, you should be good. If at the dealership, the websight they uses talks to the pcm for the vin and other info. It may work on with a tune if the APIM has no custom data to it.

Some tuners scramble the PCM strategy/OSID which may affect it. I know it alters the way some programs,apps, and even obd2 scanners work.

What did you do to get it to work? I formatted the USB drive to fat32 and loaded the files as instructed on the Ford site. It attempts to load and then stops saying problem with USB device, cancelling update.

I had an issue with one USB stick when I swapped to SYNC3 and needed to update. Tried another and it worked without issue.
