Hey guys, I have a 2012 SHO that's supposedly not compatible with Android Auto. I'd like to find out if that's really true.

Does anyone have a Sync 3 update stored on their computer that they're willing to share? I have a feeling the system will run some checks and fail if I try to install it. I have the latest update for MY CAR (Sync 1/MyTouc) saved as a backup.

My thought is that I can modify the install file to look for my Sync info and make it install. OR compare my file to that of a Sync 3 file and add it to my install file and re-install.

I've been hacking my phone since 2009 and installing things that Google says isn't available for my phone. Software is software. As long as the hardware can support it, it can be made to work.

I understand the risks and I'm willing to take them. Thanks in advance for any files that you can provide.

So do you have a sync 3

or
original sync

https://www.navtool.com/ford.aspx

I have the original Sync. I've looked in to the NavTool and aside from being expensive, it's not the same functionality. I think it hacks the backup camera input to allow you to screen mirror your phone. So you'd still have to use your phone for the functionality. I'd like the ability to open Pandora and/or Google Maps from the touchscreen with my phone in my pocket. I'm pretty sure my device is capable. I just need to be able to install the Android Auto App to my Sync system.

Some time in 2016 a bunch of cars received the Sync update that did just that (installed Android Auto). If I could get ahold of that file, figure out the exact file that installed Android Auto, and patch it into my OTA file, I think I can add it for free.

If you want a sync generation 3 update file, all you have to do is search autotrader for a 2016 plus sho (or 17 if you wanna play safe) for a vin number. Then create an a syncmyride.com account and add that vin to your account. Then you an download the update. Going to have to play around to get what you need.

Youre not going to get the whole sync software, just the update. With how sync 3 works, the new module already has the base software on it when a dealership installs a new part. They just configure the module and update the software if needed. i don't know if you'll truly get the software you need.

Also, you will have to install software in the head unit, and the APIM. Sync Gen one doesn't operate the screen like gen 2 and 3 does.

Thanks. I might try that if nobody has one. Would be a lot of poke and hope as the vin I chose would still need to be on the old update for it to allow me to grab the OTA. And even if I do get one to update I can't be sure that it's the one I need (the one that adds Android Auto). I'm really hoping someone has the file on their computer and remembers doing that update so they could share it and I'd be sure it's the right one.

I think the page tells you what youre at and what youre going too. You would be looking for 1.0 to something later which is currently 3.0 for existing models.

New models have version 3.x.

If someone who's had that update can log in and check Sync update history it should provide the OTA file name for that major update. Then I can search and see if anyone has posted it to a file sharing site. 2c805b89a72aac3b1bfd66ed59b47f0e

If you don't already have a version of Sync 3, you won't be able to update to Sync 3. It's not just a software update. It's the whole shebang.

Thank you! What year is your SHO? Does it show any update history prior to this one?

I have a 2018 SHO it was running a different version when I bought it but I am not sure what version it was and the site does not say. I just hooked the SHO up to my home wifi and it updated to this.

You cannot update a 2012 to SYNC3. That is the gen1 SYNC and no upgrade to the stock system is available for android auto.

I'm not trying to update the entire system. I only want to add Android Auto. If I can find the upgrade file that contains it, extract only that portion, and hack it into the upgrade file for my car, I may be able to install it.

Around 2016 a lot of Sync 3 vehicles received updates that added Android Auto. Just need to find that file.

That will NEVER WORK. The operating system is incompatible, the hardware is incompatible, etc. etc.

The only way you get Android Auto is with Sync 3. That's a completely different hardware platform and operating system than what you have now.

Why won't it work exactly? Exactly what is the limiting factor? What hardware limitation is holding it back? The processor? The touch screen? Bluetooth module?

The ONLY thing I see holding it back is the app isn't installed and I currently have no way to install it. This is why I'll never own an Apple phone. It's closed system and the only way to install unapproved apps is through hackery.

I'm not saying I'll succeed. I just want to find the file so I can see if I I'm able to extract Android Auto and patch it into my update file. I'll likely fail. I may even brick my head unit. All of these are risks that I'm aware of and willing to assume.

Sync 1 and 2 are based on Windows CE. Sync 3 is Blackberry's QNX operating system. There's no way to run anything from Sync 3 on Windows CE. None. No way. Never.

The hardware for each Sync version was also upgraded, I believe, more RAM, more storage, faster CPU.

It's not going to work. Period. The operating system provides all the support to the application, and for Android Auto, even if you managed to bundle the file correctly (see below), QNX will have no idea how to run it.

For the Sync2 and maybe Sync 1 that runs Windows CE, each file is "signed" in such a way that they can not be tampered with. It's like Apple's iOS. You'd have to "jailbreak" the Sync system. Which, to this day, I'm not sure has ever been done because no one cares enough to expend that much effort.

I'm an IT consultant, and while that doesn't hold much cache on the Internet, I know what I'm talking about in this instance. ;)

Thanks for the info. I just assumed they ran the same OS. You're right. I definitely won't be able to patch a Sync 3 OTA into a Sync 1. I did a quick search on Android Auto on Windows CE and found some discussion on XDA.

It's still unlikely I can get it to work but I'll redirect my research to that front. I appreciate your input.
