I'm about to pull the trigger on the Sync 2 to Sync 3 upgrade. It's not cheap, but I'll be driving this baby well over 100k miles so it's worth it. Has anyone done this? Fairly straight forward install (from video anyway).

By the way, with how Ford is updating the navigation software on Sync3, I would get one without nav, and just use either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Ford is selling the navigation updates by VIN, and locking the flash drives to the vehicle.

I won't pay for the kit but looking into buying the parts from a junkyard and using forscan to program for my car. I think there is at least one person on here that has done it.

The parts are fairly affordable on eBay, not programmed. Maybe someone with forscan would like to do some side programming for $$

Wow! Thanks for the heads up. That is nuts, not worth the $600 premium although i do like the stock app.

I did the upgrade for my 2015 Expedition. Aside from a fairly notable glitch which causes intermittent but fairly common audio glitch. Audio no matter what source automatically defaults the audio source to AM during next ignition cycle. Other than that which I am working on, system works great. Touch screen is responsive and more logic on the layout. Response is very quick and navigation is a lot more intuitive. You still have to stop to enter information or use Voice but if stopped you can enter most of entire address in one step instead of state, city, street, address etc... Travel Link works great with fuel prices, weather and traffic. There are additional features such as movie listings and sports scores but I mainly used the first three. I have the NAV and although pricey it looks factory and for the Expedition at least the transfer only took about an hour. Updates are either USB or Wi-Fi. You don't have to wait for the new NAV SD card every year.

Pricey yes but from the videos reasonably easy to install. Your discretion on the NAV if you didn't have it from factory a good time to add it....remember adding OEM NAV at factory was around $800 up to at least model year 2015. This upgrade is only $600 and gives a clean factory look. Will it help with resale....remember the Taurus is a dying vine so not sure. If you planning on keeping it until the wheels and rotors turn square then could be a good upgrade. My vendor was only offering $50 for a core of the OEM MFT screen so personally I would keep it. If you trade either go back to OEM MFT and see if you can sell the SYNC3 after reflash.

The testing I got was about a 3600 mile road trip and about another 3000+ road trip last winter in a 2017 Explorer with the same SYNC3.

Can someone with SYNC 3 post a pic of the media hub in the center console? Parts sites are telling me it's the same but I believe the new ones have just 2 USB ports no SD car, and no RCA jacks.

I have been doing more research lately and a few Focus guys have everything working with loading the original as built data into the new APIM. I am going to attempt this. On the lookout for a cheap APIM and screen, which will be deciding factor of when I move forward. I'm looking to stay under $200 for both.

Going to buy the USB hub adapter from 4D Tech as the pigtail is $30 so for $50 you can plug and play without cutting and splicing... https://www.4dtech.com/accessories/miscellaneous/

Fakra GPS antennas are cheap on Amazon

For reference the SYNC3 APIMS have a short cable connecting it to the screen where SYNC2 APIMs do not. I have heard the second to last letter of the part number B is non-nav, and C is nav equipped but have not confirmed this.

Correct on losing the SD and RCA ports. You switch out the media hub and still keep the USB. With the $2100 my price included everything. Literally plug and play ne screen APIM, all connectors media hub, and all connectors. My Expedition took about an hour and only required removal of the instrument panel bezel. Taurus a little more complex but the You Tube video was very helpful. My vendor was 4D tech Remember the glitch of the AM audio switching.

Follow up: The shipped version is 3.0 There is a 2.3 update but it is not an update. I initially thought it was a 3.0.2.3 but two separate versions. The 2.3 update is actually the previous version. If you go back to 2.3 it might not cure the audio glitch. Either live with the 3.0 glitch or take a chance on going backwards. Either way I would pressure Ford to make a update to 3.1 and cure this glitch. Apparently the APIM and ACM are not talking with each other.

Another thought and just thinking out loud. Ordering the SYNC3 update from FORD. Same price and with two known Ford products hopefully they can talk to each other. Might be a visit to ford dealer in my future,

I have heard the new updates are VIN locked so that may be an issue for you to upgrade directly through Ford.

That is correct. I visited Ford dealer and when I asked about the FOR Direct SYNC3 upgrade kit they started looking.....guess where there search went to.....;4D Tech the same vendor as mine. The other part of that is lets say an accident. Insurance may not cover aftermarket so they might only cover to Replace the original MFT screen but lets hope it doesn't come to that. That point is probably moot since Ford does not sell the SYNC3 directly....too bad could get some business. If they kept it at same price or at least close then could be a good marketing tool. I guess we will just have to get locking fuel caps and locking wheel lugs.

Follow up and another theory. 1. Alternate Theory.....since SYNC3 is newer technology it is possible that the original Audio Control Module (ACM) is flaking out and as they say...…."not playing well with others" the others being the SYNC3 Screen and APIM.

Follow up: Took me about 20 minutes to explain what I was asking for....well 30 seconds for me to ask... the rest for the Ford IVT Tech to process and understand. I asked a simple question...…."What is the current version of SYNC3? Easy question right? Version 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3....etc you guys get it.

I think I gave the guy an aneurism and he is probably at minimum going home with a headache.

I tossed logic and common sense which probably added to his confusion...… I said that SYNC 3 whatever version is SYNC3 so if lets say Taurus with SYNC3 is running lets say Version 3.1 That should conclude that ALL FLEETS should be updated with SYNC3 V3.1 I think that's where his head exploded. By all fleets I mean Explorer, Expedition, F series pickups, Focus, Fusion, Taurus etc...

Eventually I was able to pry out the answer I was looking for and ironically I had to WITHOLD the VIN number to get the answer but I got it.

According to tech right before he was presumably led from phone to the Tylenol room was there is a Version 3.1.

I immediately called my vendor and talked to their tech support rep. He could not confirm the validity and availability of the 3.1 he did promise to get in touch with Ford Engineers for further research.

This isn't a immediate answer but at least lets me now I am not chasing a rabbit hole and there is apparently a software update to look for.

SYNCMYRIDE Will probably be useless if your looking for the upgrade I think that you will have to check the Vendors website or word of mouth for updates. If you find someone with newer SYNC3 vehicles preferably OEM SYNC3 than that is a good start. If they get 3.1 or 3.2 and your still running 3.0 then talk to vendor. My vendor said if the 3.1 update is confirmed as valid and available they will put on their website.

Audio glitch aside I still think the upgrade is worth the investment. Something to think about though...…

If you have SYNC MFT/NAV And decide to do the SYNC3 without NAV think about selling. If next purchaser does their research and find that vehicle came with NAV and you leave the SYNC 3 installed without NAV.....could comeback to haunt you. At minimum disclosure or possible revert back to the OEM MFT SYNC2 but remember you have to keep the OEM media hub which has the AUX/RCA and Aux input. I personally like the OEM NAV and the SYNC 3 NAV module works even better. I do like the clean factory look however I do carry a second portable GPS if nothing else for back up and a dash cam. The portable is usually for rentals which is hit or miss on NAV.

Also note....with the SYNC3 media hub you lose the following SD, RCA AND AUX. with most people going to phones for NAV and Wi-Fi map/software updates MP3s are probably not going to be around too much longer...….Microsoft Zune anyone?

@SHOdded...that is not MFT(SYNC). That is for MyFord...ie the 4.2" screen setup.

MFT(SYNC2) current version is 3.10 which is still a dealer only install. Any install packs you find floating around the net are put together by non Ford employees. Could it be setup exactly how Ford would have done it for the end user install...possibly but my guess is not.

SYNC3 current version is 3.0 for NA (North America). 2019 units will likely have 3.2 in them (I have one) but the user update on that is anyone's guess. Ford re-mapped the internal drive space to allow 3.2 to fit. Don't know if Ford will come up with a modified 3.2 for the prior units or if they will have some install that restructures the internal drive spacing.

Here is a fun one:

Ford discontinued SYNC (gen1) there is now SYNC gen 3, lite. The OASIS page will say SYNC 3, but do your researh and there isnt a touchscreen.

I have had numerous dealerships replace an APIM and the say, where did nav go? Just to tell them, it never had navigation and it was a modification. Then they ask how to fix it.... bad times. Really the dealership can kinda fix it, but it's hard to help them out that way.

If you have a modded system, let the dealer know so they do ***** it up. And let the subsequent owner know.

I was thinking about the map update and how ford is screwing the pooch on guys who want the map, but don't have a stock system. This has to be brought to someone's attention.
