I thought that the subframe hardware recall applied to all 86-95 Taurus/Sable ... my 95 does not have the holes drilled in the floor, and i've tried 2 dealerships and they both say there is no open recall. The second one also tried telling me that the recall does not apply to the SHO because it uses a yamaha motor LMAO! even though this same dealership completed the recall on my 92 MTX last summer.... hmmm.

WOW.... which dealers did you go to? I found the white bear dealer was helpful... plus they had the parts in stock.

Well talk with their service manager about it. I bet a nicely worded complaint and a threat to the BBB will get them to do it. Also, show them documentation!

My car's a '95 and the recall has been done. I checked on the floor and there was no holes, I touched with my hand under that black isulation thing and there was the rubber boot. (I remember RacerX posting a pic of his car with the isulation drilled througt) The dealer wasn't able to tell me if the recall has been done, so I called at Ford Canada and they told me it was done in 1999 somewhere in MA.
So check carefully, maybe they did it like mine.

Hey, yeah. My local dealer AND some main ford hotline place gave me the same crap. The VIN wasn't on their list, and so it's not their problem. They wanted me to tow my car in for them to inspect it, haha.

Unless Ford has recently changed it's policy, it's been my understanding that dealers are reimbursed for recall repairs, to include parts and labor - just like other warranty repairs.

How do I check to see if this has been done? or any recall for that matter?

Call Ford or look under the mat where your pedals are at. If it's been done you will see a rubber grommet hiding a 1 to 2 inches hole in the floor.

Was there something posted about not honoring the recall after a certain date a while ago?? I thought I read something on the forum a long time ago. Might be the case and might have been something a dealer told a customer. I forget.

I just checked up on it,the recall is 98-s-36.the `s` indicates a safety recall which does not expire.Only vehicles originally registered in rust belt states are/were covered.you have to run `oasis` on your car to check coverage. If it has been performed the recall will not show up on your vin check, however if it was not in a rust state it will also not show up,and `oasis` only covers records for 10 years so unless the recall is open for your vin a dealer cannot check if was done due to the fact all gen 2 cars are over 10 years old.Best bet is get the kit XF1Z-5A364-AA and do it yourself. It only paid .6 hr back in the day.

Yeah, I've now had three dealers tell me they cannot find any information on the recall (even though I even provided them the recall number - 98S36), and thus that they're not responsible for this recall. Well, maybe that little blurb from the NHTSA in the third paragraph will change their mind: :finger:

U.S. Department
of Transportation

National Highway
Traffic Safety
Administration

L.W. Camp, Director
Automotive Safety Office
Ford Motor Corporation
Fairlane Plaza South, Suite 400
330 Town Center Drive
Dearborn, MI 48126

Dear Mr Camp:

This acknowledges receipt of your Defect Information Report date December 15, 1998, and
subsequent information received by facsimile January 4, 1999, submitted in accordance with 49
CFR Part 573, "Defect and Noncompliance Reports." This recall involves 2,697,000 Ford Motor
Company (Ford) 1986 through 1995 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable vehicles manufactured
from October 14, 1985,through June 27, 1995; and certain 1988 through 1994 Lincoln
Continental vehicles manufactured from November 4, 1987, through November 18, 1994. The
affected vehicles were sold, or currently registered, in Connecticut, Delaware, District of
Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts,
Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio,
Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The rear
lower subframe mount plate nut can experience stress corrosion cracking if subjected to long
term exposure to road salts which are used extensively in the above listed states. Detachment
of the body mounts at the rear corners of the subframe, which supports the engine and
transmission, would allow the rear corners of the subframe to drop. The assigned
identification number for this recall is 98V-323 (Ford Recall No. 98S36).

This recall was the subject of a Recall Query, RQ97-009, conducted by the Office of Defects
Investigation.

Ford is responsible for the remedy of these vehicles from this date forward, regardless of
vehicle age, mileage, or ownership.
You should know that the agency provides a listing of
safety recalls to the media at the end of each month. This recall will be part of that listing.

Quarterly Status Reports

As stated in Part 573.6, submission of the first six consecutive quarterly status reports is
required within one month after the close of the calendar quarter in which notification to
purchasers occurs.
As stated in in your report, owner notification was expected to begin
January 18, 1999.
Therefore, the first quarterly report will be due in this office by
April 30, 1999.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Pat Wallace at (202) 366-5232 or fax at (202)
366-7882.

Sincerely,
/ S /
Jonathan D. White, Chief
Recall Analysis Division
Office of Defects Investigation

If anyone wants their cars checked for open recalls, PM your VIN and I will run it and let you know if there are any open.

I worked at the dealer back when that recall was first started. I HATED doing them, it was a total PITA and we went through a lot of BIG holesaws :). I did my own recall on my old 91 Plus.

As far as recalls go, since this is a safety recall, it should be open forever till it's done.

If your car doesn't show the recall open, there is a possibility that it WAS done, but the tech didn't do the whole job, he just put in the new bolts/mounts and didn't cut the floor to insert the updated anchor nuts.
