Dear Mr Camp:
This acknowledges receipt of your Defect Information Report date December 15, 1998, and
subsequent information received by facsimile January 4, 1999, submitted in accordance with 49
CFR Part 573, "Defect and Noncompliance Reports." This recall involves 2,697,000 Ford Motor
Company (Ford) 1986 through 1995 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable vehicles manufactured
from October 14, 1985,through June 27, 1995; and certain 1988 through 1994 Lincoln
Continental vehicles manufactured from November 4, 1987, through November 18, 1994. The
affected vehicles were sold, or currently registered, in Connecticut, Delaware, District of
Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts,
Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio,
Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The rear
lower subframe mount plate nut can experience stress corrosion cracking if subjected to long
term exposure to road salts which are used extensively in the above listed states. Detachment
of the body mounts at the rear corners of the subframe, which supports the engine and
transmission, would allow the rear corners of the subframe to drop. The assigned
identification number for this recall is 98V-323 (Ford Recall No. 98S36).
This recall was the subject of a Recall Query, RQ97-009, conducted by the Office of Defects
Investigation.
Ford is responsible for the remedy of these vehicles from this date forward, regardless of
vehicle age, mileage, or ownership. You should know that the agency provides a listing of
safety recalls to the media at the end of each month. This recall will be part of that listing.
Quarterly Status Reports
As stated in Part 573.6, submission of the first six consecutive quarterly status reports is
required within one month after the close of the calendar quarter in which notification to
purchasers occurs. As stated in in your report, owner notification was expected to begin
January 18, 1999. Therefore, the first quarterly report will be due in this office by
April 30, 1999.
