I'm thinking of buying this SHO. The shifter can be moved into all positions except 1st and reverse. The trans is stuck in 3rd. Has anyone ever had these symptoms and it was NOT a cable issue? Anyone ever had this happen and it was a junk transmission? I have to drive for 3 hours to look at it, Should I? Motor apparently runs well. Price is right.

I don't suspect the clutch, as that wouldn't cause the trans to be stuck in 3rd and certain shifter positions unselectable. The shifter doesn't shift, but it moves everywhere but 1st and reverse. I assume it's just the cables, but "Anyone ever had this happen and it was a junk transmission?" The clutch could very well be toast, it's just not indicated by these symptoms.

I'd suspect a pressure plate or synchro issue. Question though....how can it move to all positions except 1st and reverse but yet be stuck in 3rd gear? Are you saying that the shifter moves to all but 1st and reverse and even though the trans stays in 3rd? Is everything connected to the trans properly? To the shifter properly?

If it's a PP or synchro issue it will require the removal of the trans to fix. Is it worth your time to do that? You have to be the judge on that really. Depending on the price I might go for it. Most trans issues can be fixed, especially if you have spare parts laying everywhere like me.

The tranny stays in 3rd, but the shifter moves. It could be as simple as cables, it could be an internal trans problem. I have a transaxle I could put in it, but the car's going for $600, and it's just not worth it to me if it needs torn apart. Once it's apart it would get a new clutch and subframe bushings, seals, and God knows what else turned up. Probably be $400 in parts before I blinked. If it was nearby, I'd go look. If the cables were off, $OLD! I don't think I wanna drive 6 hrs to find out.

Are broken shift forks something that happens to this tranny? Would worn synchros cause it to stick in gear with the engine off?
Apparently the guy drove it in 3rd and it seemed OK, no horrible noises.

Where is it at? If it is kinda close to Athens or Cincy I could look at it for you...
