I have read several posts in the forum search engine /starter stuck/ stuck starter/ and so on and it seems the fix was replacing the starter ,do that and have your battery tested under load but clean your terminals first.Test the alternator also,Advance auto does the tests free of charge .

Thanks guys. Yes, I was talking about my 94 ATX. I bought this starter from Pep Boys and installed it on 26MAR08.

Yesterday, I talked to the guy at the parts counter and he insisted that the problem is not the solenoid. He thinks the problem is the ignition, but claimed, "If you want me to diagnose your problem, I cannot do that. But if you want me to tell you the starter is defective then I can't do that either because the problem you described does not sound like an starter issue." I told him, I don't want to through parts at the problem but I have a good hunch that the solenoid on the starter is the problem. He told me, " I cannot diagnose your problem, but a good technician can tell if the starter is defective or not." I asked him to if they had a starter in inventory at the store. He said that they don't have one and if I order one and the problem is not the starter then I have just bought myself a spare starter. After arguing with him a little longer he finally expained that they have a testing device for starters and that I could bring it in to be tested. I could have choked him for not telling me that right away.

I took my SHO home and removed the starter and brought the starter back. The parts counter guy I spoke with earlier was not there. The manager saw that I had a starter in my hand and took the starter to be bench tested once I explained what the problem was. The machine read that it cannot bench test of this starter and it must be tested in while installed in the car. I could have hit the parts guy in the head with this friggin starter. The manager looked at the starter and said, "It smells hot. We'll replace it." The manager placed a special order for the starter since closest starter is located in Indiana. Should be here on Monday.

I feel confident that you guys have helped point me in the right direction. Thanks again.

Could be the ignition switch. You are going to have to test it to see if there is still a closed circuit after the key is turned off.

An easy place to do this on the ATX is at the MLP switch on top of the tranny. Red and light blue wire I believe. It should not have any voltage on it when the key is off.

Thinking more about this if the gear selector is in any gear and NOT park or neutral the ignition switch circuit should be open and rule out the key switch and MLP switch unless they have both failed in a closed position at the same time.

I would say then that the relay part of the solenoid is sticking closed.

I installed the new starter. It only took 10 days for Pep Boys to get it for me. Anyway, so far so good. Time will tell if it was the problem since the starter problem was intermittent, but becoming more prevalent. Thanks for your help.
