My tape deck died and I was going to remove the stock tape deck and replace with a spare I have.

I have the fancy tool but the unit won't budge. I applied the tool to both the tape deck and CD player and still nothing.

The feel loose when the tool is inserted but it seems something is holding them back.

Car is a bone stock 95 ATX with JBL stereo.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Push the tools in until you feel them click. Once they do, spread them apart with moderate force, and pull firmly.

Repeat until the radio is out.

Those spring clips that hold in the stereo HU and CD player are a pain to get out. RacerX is spot on though. Make sure you push the removal tools away from center and yes, you can insert them too far.

Shish kabob spears work better than those removal tools. The square ones are even better than the round ones.

I have used coat hangers bent in a u shape. If you put a slight curve in the wires such that both ends curve toward the unit (on either side). When you pull outward on them, they are depressing the retaining brackets more than using the straight tool. The tool only needs to go in an inch or so.

yeah i used a coat hanger on mine last week actually. Had factory cd and tape deck in the 90 that i took out when the tape deck finally died and wouldnt work anymore with my little AUX input adapter i had been using to play my phone through it. Worked fairly easy. You shouldn't be able to break it. just shove the wire in there and maybe use a flat head screw driver on the edge to get a little pressure on it.

I finally got it out. I had to wiggle it out the first inch and then it slid out easily. I don't think the stereo has ever been out of its hole since 1995.
