So i have recently purchased a 93 atx with the jbl premium sound with cd player, and when you turn on the stereo it cycles between am and cd, you can hear the cd player doing something and then it will go back to am. It just keeps doing this, and while it is doing it there is nothing coming out of the speakers. So what i am trying to figure out is, i know i will need to replace the deck, but is there anyway to test the amps to establish if they are working? any help would be great!

Unless you are really patient, you will drive yourself nuts trying to figure out audio problems on the original equipment head units. Mine used to just turn itself on and off at random. No rhyme nor reason to it, just like it was haunted.

Just replace it with any new unit you want and/or can afford. Adapter kits are available most anywhere to plug in just about any aftermarket radio. If you don't want to use the amp in the trunk, a bypass plug for it is available as well.

If you want to keep the car original, there are usually a couple of OE equipment radio / CD players on Ebay.

Good Luck.

You should be able to manage getting an aftermarket hu in for about $110 (100 for the head unit and $10 for the harness adapter).... it takes about 30 minutes and $2 worth of butt connectors... it's simple and the SHO isn't a PITA to install in...

As I recall the problem here is the microswitches in the CD. Many factory units were replaced because of this but all they need is a cleaning.

The design of the factory Sony unit permits the switches to accumulate fine dust.

Take out the CD. Remove the faceplate. Use tuner cleaner on the witches. You will actually be able to feel them sticking on you.
This is what is screwing up the system. Mine does this periodically too. They all do. Just service them and they are usually fine.

Figure do this every 3 or 4 years on this service.

some butcher removed my OEM unit from my '95 MTX! All that is left is the four OEM speakers and AMP in the trunk. It has two plugs. One is plugged into the left side facing it, and although the other one fits into the other side it quits working when that is plugged in. The CD changer that was in the trunk is gone too. In the dash is this low bid cd radio that sounds... OKAY? But I would like to have the old one back and working like new. Maybe adding a SUB as I am told I have the power from the amp to do that and the space on the rear deck as well. (Centered) I would go aftermarket but really would like that OEM look when you sit in it or show the SHO. Would be nice to be able to use the dash controls too. The guy never hooked up the power ant either. Or it may not work? I have no idea. I am open to suggestions.

Thanks for the cleaning tip though..
