cd player puts out static sometimes. is it hit or just dirty?
Does it sound more like oversampling (the clicking noises you might hear when playing a dirty cd)? If this is the case and everything is clean and not dusty or anything, the cd player is on its way out. You should try a lens cleaner first to see if it helps.

How to tell if it's the motor in the player:

The motor that spins the cd is not spinning fast enough, causing the oversampling static noise. Does it do it more with burned cd's and not so much with regularly pressed cds? If so, then it's definatly the motor. It's not replaceable either. I took one player apart and the motor is part of circuit board that appears to be a throw-way item. Best bet is to try to pick one up from a junk yard. I paid 40 bucks for mine. It's the same player that's in most of the Ford Premium sound systems, be it either the JBL system, or the Mach 460 systems that used a double-din setup like our cars.
