Still Overheating?

I replaced my thermostat and the car runs better, but still the temp creeps up high on the scale. If I run A/C forget it, have to shut it down after a few minutes.

I'm thinking the fan, but when I hot wired it to the battery, it was spinning! How fast should the fan go? It wasn't going like crazy, but it was moving a little air. '92 MTX, should be single speed fan I believe.

Can overheating mess up a water pump? Maybe I'm not getting enough flow.

Your fan should be pushing strong air once it gets to temp. ( someone here knows that temp number). Your fan should kick in with the a/c on when the temp gets to approx. R or M on the gauge (again this is on my car). If you hear it kick on, but it's not pushing a ton of air or enough to cool it down then it's most likely the fan motor.

I had a bad fan motor that wasn't pushing enough air, or any at all eventually, so replacing the motor only did the trick.

Mine doesn't like heat either. I'm thinking air is in the system. But i'm not sure. So help on this topic would be good. Although, it will run GREAT at like night time running down the highway. Its just in traffic it don't like.

Very typical of a bad fan motor, or the motor not getting the correct signal from the CCRM to kick it on at temp. I suspect again you are getting the proper signals, but the motor cannot respond. They get really dirty and the copper coils get worn down.

Bad-clogged rad can do that too

Id go with a new fan , i got one working pm me if you need one.

FWIW, the fan should kick in at 191*, IIRC.....and I agree totally. Replace the fan and see what happens.

i just had a similar problem with my 93. Replaced the motor and its fine now.

one thing to be sure is that your fan and fan shroud will fit the motor you are putting in. I had to chisel away at my fan to get it to fit on my new motor because it was different than the stock one. Also (and im not sure if yours has this or not) make sure the fan you get has the turning peg that propels the fan or else the motor will just spin and not do you a lot of good.

Turn the AC on. At idle the fan will be on.

I just replaced my fan motor on my 95 MTX. I went through 2 before finding an exact fit. I went to the Siemens Electronics website (they make the OEM motor), they have the numer listed PM9029, the only local place that could get it was Autozone. It was the exact same motor for short $, like $88.00.

The part I listed from rockauto is a direct stock replacement with no modifications other than needing to splice on the connector.

The fan comes on at idle with the AC on. But I think it's fried and not pushing enough air.

How high in the temp gauge are you seeing when your thinking its over heating?

ok I have the same car, 92 MTX. I ordered a fan motor from murreys auto and piocked it up today (siemen pm250). and guess what... lol. I returned it shortly after. headed down to autozone with the old fan motor in hand. He looked it up and asked me "driver or passenger side". I don't know what you guys have but I have one fan... right in the middle. (now located in the trunk)

does anyone know if that is infact the replacment for the fan I removed? I don't mind spending more for the right one, it's more of a time issue. I only want to own so many fan motors in my lifetime

My car, when working good, NEVER spikes a temp over the M or A in "normal" even with the AC on. Stays rock solid.

Now with the AC off, it will creep into the O-R range during relatively short stop-go driving (15-20 min) after the car intially warms. If I run AC, forget it, the temp rises fast! and i have to turn the AC off to limp home.

Still waiting on the D@mn junkyard part!

Sho enough , 2 fans , its only on ATX's. 1 Fan = MTX.

Gotta rememeber...sometimes parts are out of stock or they gotta come from a different distributor...can't expect immediate shipping on parts for a car that hasn't been built for almost 12 years....

Sure enough, WRONG FAN from junkyard! Finally ripped out the old one and tore it apart (I'd been thinking it was helping a little since it was still spinning). Found all the brushes wore down to nubs, one was completely gone!

Question is, how do you fix the braided wires onto the new brushes? Or do they come with wires attached and you solder the wires in?
