I have an issue with my steering where when I make a rolling turn its like the power steering is binding. I only notice this when Im up to speed then I slow down to about 20 - 25 to make a turn at an intersection. It dont matter if it is left or right, it feels that im forcing the wheels to turn not the power steering. If I slow down even more like to 10-15 seems to turn just fine. Same if I stop at the intersection like if its a stop sign.

From what I gather from other posts is these cars are known for rack and pinion problems. I also find posts that could explain it as a subframe issue. I also had a thought that the VAPS my not be trigging and turning the power up when I slow down till it goes to the next step at the slower yet speed.

Does anyone know how I can figure out what of these problems or others I might have? Or does anyone no right off hand from experence what could be causing this?

Thanks

vehicle speed sensor could be faulty, not sending the new speed to the VAPS in time for the turn. Cheaper to replace than a new rack.

Re: Steering Issue

Check the most obvious first, which would be the power steering reservior. You might just be low on power steering.

if its an automatic, faulty vss could cause it to shift hard. have you checked for codes? on an mtx, car could cut out at speed.

my power steering does something like that too. when i take a turn at speed, the steering cycles between high and low power wiggling the wheel back and forth. also sometimes when parking, the steering gets tight like its on the freeway.
