I plan on replacing the whole thing eventually. Solenoid still works just the top where the battery terminal studs stays loose. I already tried tightening all the retaining nuts and had no luck. I just want to know what internal parts of the solenoid could be defected. Any info is greatly appreciated thanks.

Just grab a replacement one, there not too much money. I don't know how much the gen 1s are but I can get a replacement one for my gen 2 for 16 dollars cdn. Next time please specify the details of your car.

As mentioned in another post the early cars have the start solenoid on the firewall and the later models it is on the start itself.
If your '92 still has it on the firewall it should be an easy find at a local auto store. I replacement mine for $9 the other day.

Mine is mounted on the starter itself. Do I have to remove the whole starter to replace the solenoid?

Yes you will have to remove the starter to replace the solenoid, its only another 2 more bolts one you have the wires off to take the starter out. And 2 more torx head bolts when you have the starter out to remove the solenoid from the starter.
