Occasionally when coming to a stop with the clutch pedal depressed (in), the engine rpm will dip down to 400-500rpm, red oil light will flash a few times, engine will sputter, and then come back up to normal operating speed. The engine has actually stalled on me a few times. Most of the time its operation is normal and engine rpm stays about 1000 when braking. Idle is perfect, no hunting or missing going on. My first thought would be the vehicle speed sensor. No codes either, so I’m not sure what to try first. Engine runs flawlessly otherwise. I just installed the 184K (original brass blocking rings!) mile spare transmission last week, and only since has the problem occurred. This is my Blue 92.

Where should I go from here?

Thanks
Silas

Did you have the battery disconnected while doing the tranny install? If so, the computer is probably still relearning.

Could be the power steering pressure switch? Did you plug it back in after dropping the sub-frame?

First try the idle reset procedure posted at the top of this subject heading. The computer only learns the idle in the first 70 seconds after the first start after the battery has been disconnected.

Does your cruise control work? If not, it could be a bad VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) The VSS is supposed to keep the idle up when coasting down to a stop (clutch in).

Ill try the idle reset procedure and swap in a working AIB valve tommorow.

The VSS (this is the sensor located on the MTX right?) is plugged in...but I still dont know if its working properly. The car needs a new TB so I have yet to plug in the CC, I should get around to that tommorow.

NJSHO,
Is that the two wire sensor on the steering rack? Yes, I did plug it in but the lock tabs were broken so there is a chance it backed off. Do 92's have VAPS? Feels like Im driving an 89, steering wheel is pretty stiff comparied to my 94. It has a brand new rack BTW - and fresh fluid.

Its not the idle control - I reset and its still doing the same thing.

PS pressure sensor is plugged in. Again does the 92 have VAPS? Sure doesnt feel like it...

Thanks for the help, Im sure its either the IAB valve or VSS

92 = No VAPS.

If you're coasting and push the clutch in, or put it in neutral, does the idle stay high (around 11-1200 rpm) or does it immediately drop down to 800? If it is the latter, the VSS is bad.

If the car otherwise idles fine and doesn't die when turning the A/C on and off, chances are it is the VSS.

It stays high usually (around 1200rpm), and only dipps below 1000 when the problem occurs. And yes, it idles perfectly otherwise. If it does turn out to be the VSS (I will try a new AIB) I wont worry about it. The driveline only needs to last another 1000 miles or so. :)
