I have a 95 ATX with 119k on it. My speedometer works great until I hit about 90 mph, then It starts jumping, sometimes all the way to 140. As long as I keep it under 90 it's fine. Is this a problem with the speedometer itself or the cable or a sensor or somthing?

Thanks

Have you noticed any strange shifting or cruise control problems? If not, I'd surmise it's probably the speedo head itself.

Hear any scratching noises in your dash? The speedo cable is likely worn and needs replacing.

My speedometer bounces from 0 all the way up. There is also an audible sqeaking coming from it. My car is an 94' MTX.

My speedometer bounces only a little bit and does it through the whole range and only when it's cold. Also when it's cold it reads much higher than the car is traveling. I've heard this is a problem with weak spring, I think your problem over 90 mph would be the same thing.

SPDATT it does make scratching noises when it's bouncing. What spring are you talking about?

half-way there, I think.
Sounds like the speedo head unit. My did the exact thing. When it got cold (below 40) it would start dancing. Got worse over time. I replaced it with a J/Y unit.

All these remarks pretty much sound like mine did to me until I took off the cluster and fixed it. My speedometer was jumping everwhere, just leaving my drive way down the street I was hitting 140+ then on the highway it did a 360 turn and was reading on 40mph. I don't know how to explain the fixing problem but I messed with mine and a hour after moving and testing I got it working. You can check where your cable coming out of the fire wall connects before the transmission and right there there's like a cotter pin that holds the cables together and I seen a SHO w/out one before and when it isn't pushed down all the way it will cause the jumping at certain a certain speed and above like it did on mine. Hope that long story helps.
