Ever since I was rear ended over a year ago, I have been having problems with my speedometer.

The cable gear inside the VSS, sheared off. Other than the speedometer not working, I imagine that the VSS was not getting the correct signal, because my car would stall when I slowed down to a stop. I could keep it from stalling if I blipped the throttle before I disengaged the clutch.

When I replaced the grear, the speedometer still did not work, but the stalling almost went away completely.

Eventually I replaced the entire VSS (the aluminum body along with the plastic sensor), but my speedometer only worked partially. Jumping all over the place and not giving me an accurate reading.

The other day, I replaced the entire cable, and I noticed that the speedometer worked well, but only for a time. It would then shut down, only to jump back in.

I found that by jiggling the VSS, the speedo gears would engage and disengage. There is enough play at the VSS and the transmission, to move the gears apart enough so that the ring gear inside the tranny would engage and disengage the speedo cable gear.

When I rebuilt my tranny, I did not notice any unusual wear on the speedometer gear inside the tranny.

Is the looseness of the VSS at the tranny normal? The retaining screw is tight but it does not keep the aluminun bushing from shifting around.

I have been thinking of removing about .050" from the bottom of the VSS, so it would sit deeper in the tranny and, perhaps, the speedo gear could engage the teeth of the ring gear a bit deeper. I imagine that I should also use a larger diameter VSS retaining screw to hold the aluminum body tighter in the socket.

Any ideas if this might work?

Has anybody ever had a similar problem?

Jose
