Spark Plug/Wires???

First of all, it's a 94 ATX. I rinsed off the engine yesterday, and of course I had water in the plug wells, even though I was careful. It's probably some of the plugs are fouled. Would this also cause the wires to go bad? It starts fine and if I slowly increase the throttle all the way up until I hit the rev limiter, it's fine. But if I goose the throttle at all it'll start to sputter. So my question is how to test the wires to see if they're bad and are there any plugs and wires that I can get locally that will function until I can get a hold of the ford ones. I think I remember reading that a set for the MTX will work on the ATX they're just a little bit longer, correct?

You did dry out the water right? If you can see arcing in the wires while they're wet, then you need to replace them. Also you can check the resistance in the wires with a DMM. The resistance shouldn't exceed 1k OHM's per foot. As for the MTX wires, they are slightly shorter than the ATX wires. They will fit the ATX with minor improvising. If you do get new wires, do your SHO a favor and contact www.Fordpartsnetwork.com for the cheapest MTX wires that I know of. I got the Accel plug wires and I'm now paying for it in poor performance.

Hopefully you will get everything sorted out without too much trouble. However, I hope that you have also learned to not use water to wash your engine. You are just asking for trouble with water, as there is a lot of electrical stuff that doesn't particularly like being wet. Your best bet is to use some clean rags, a degreasing cleaner (sprayed onto the rags), and some elbow grease. It is not much fun, but the engine comes out really clean, and there are no resulting electrical problems! Good Luck! thumbs_u

I sure wish we could spread the word about putting water on the SHO engine. Many of the newer members posts have something to do with this cardinal sin for an electronically controlled engine. The 3.0L Motorcraft wires will fit on the 3.2L without any problem. No special requirements other than to not leave any slack when the wires are snapped into the clips and allow them to run as straight as possible under the throttle body to the coil pack.

I got wires and plugs for my 94 ATX from CincySho for $185 and $40 respectively, with next to nothing shipping and handling. The turn around time was about 3 days, regular shipping. This, for the parts the ford dealership wanted to charge me $400 and $165 for... parts only, I mean! Then tried to convince me that what I would be getting would be some after market, no name crap. What I got from CincySho were Motorcraft. I thought it was a good deal, persnally (but don't rely on my opinion, I'm something of a neophite).

You could've gotten the wires for $85 from www.fordpartsnetwork.com. The plugs probably could've been bought locally for about $4-5 if shopping around. Just some future reference. I think that an intellectual women that can r&r parts on her own car (especially a SHO) is very.....enticing, to say the least. thumbs_u

well, based on the prices you said are available at fordpartsnetwork, it doesn't look like I did such a good job with the r&r! I made up for it, though, on really good deal on an exhaust system for my 98 'vette. I blew one of the mufflers off - aggressive downshift, maybe (just kidding!) and the chevy dealer wanted $566 for just one muffler PLUS installation. I figured at those prices, I might as well go with a whole new catback system (well, to tell the truth, I was starting to really like the sound of the car without the muffler off)... anyway, long story short, I ended up finding a brand new, stock exhaust system on ebay (a take-off from a lingenfelter modified 2002 'vette with the polished stainless tips) got the whole thing including shipping to my door 2 days later, for $169! $90 installation and that $650-one muffler job went down to $260. Now that was a bargain (if only they sold gucci's on ebay I could save even more!).

What a sweet deal on the exhaust! I didn't know about Ford Parts Network either when I started gathering parts for my 60K. The big ones that I spent a lot for were water pump ($200 new), CPS ($90), and timing belt ($60). I think I spent about $6 each for the spark plugs (FPN has those for $3.79). I finally found this site and learned about ford parts network. Got my wires for $83.99. Also got a new ford waterpump on ebay for $45 to install in 120,000 miles or so.
