Spark Plug Info

I just bought double platinum Autolites (I know, I know, but I can't get the car started to justify spending $1.50 more per plug plus shipping that I don't have), and they came with little rings in the box that screw down to the bottom of the thread. Are these supposed to be on there? If one or two aren't (or if most are) would that keep the car from starting?

Also, what is the gap supposed to be at?

The gap is .044". Those metal rings are actually gaskets, and yes, they should be installed. No, not using them won't prevent the engine from starting.

nothing wrong with Autolite`s,especially the double platinums!....autolites usually come with the rings loose in the box,install them and then gap from .042 to .046...best to gap at .044...

If the spark plug boots to not fit tightly against the valve cover with those plugs, you will be soon having moisture problems in the wet Seattle area. You'll think $1.50 was a big expense.

You'd be AMAZED at how well the Motorcraft plugs (AGSP32PP) fit in there. The plug boots on my SHO are now pressed snugly against the valve cover. With my old Autolite plugs, they moved around a bit.

heh, I knew that would happen. I was not asking whether the Motorcrafts would have been a better buy in the long run, I don't doubt that, I just asked if my car should start/run with those in. Once I decide the car is a keeper THEN I will buy more expensive parts. I just want the damn thing started first.

Yeah it should start and run fine with those plugs. The plugs aren't your problem. But like you say, once you get it running good, start thinking about putting in the proper stock plugs.
