moderators - can you tighten up the requirements to sign up for the forum to cut down on all the spam / advertising threads that are cluttering up the forum. it makes me crazy, and I don't need any help in that department...

I deleted two ads. What else do you see? Please mark as reported. I will work on tightening up on spam.

Yes. That was a bad one. I deleted all those, but it was a slow response. We need to get rid of spam faster.

Tightening up registration is a fine idea, but we end up with a lot of potential users who can't join and stop trying due to not getting approval. I've seen it/heard about it several times.

I know it goes in cycles and we are in a crappy part of the cycle now, but some other boards think it tends to be a very few individuals who keep registering with new id's and new "real names" but some of the other boards have been successful at cutting it down greatly by capturing the ip address of people who attempt to register, so that if it turns out to be a spammer they can 1) usually figure out who it really is, and 2) automatically delete new attempts to join from the ip address that has previously been flagged as a spam provider. I would think that the tech gurus could add that fairly easily if its not being done now.

Unless the (c) tag is just dated at the bottom of the forum, are we really still running a 6... almost 7 year old version of vBulletin?

If that's correct, that might have something to do with it. Food for thought.

I hope they have the indexing and search issues figured out by now in vB!

They do. The newer versions of vB have MUCH better search functions that faster and better are finding the correct topics that correlate to what you searched and not just everything with said words in it.

How do you report spammers under the new forum software? There's a spammer on the loose, but I can't figure out how to report it...

At least for me, when using the Tapatalk App from my mobile....

Touch the post to highlight it, then in the upper right there's a series of 3 dots vertically positioned that once touched, will display a secondary sub menu.

Of that secondary menu, one of the available options is a 'report' tab.

Click on that and you'll be able to submit an official spam report from there.

You also will see a box where you can add comments with your submission.

I believe it defaults to a simple message of: "It's Spam!".

Hope that helps.

OK, at this point the first 146 "new" posts are all spam. It didn't take them long to find the updated forum and exploit it... The fact that when I logged on last night there were 5 registered users, 55 guests and 26 bots was worrisome - and my concerns proved valid.

Suggestions:
1. make it so a human must "ok" a new user before they become live.
2. limit the number of posts per day from a new user for a period of time until they prove themselves.
3. limit the discoverability of the forum by bots.

I don't use Tapatalk. It looks like there's now a "Report" link at the bottom of each post, so either I was looking so hard I couldn't see it, or I got a ridiculously quick response. ;) Either way, it's there now.

I made an update to fix permissions issues. Lol. The report link wasn't there before.
